Bravo I agree. Im a newbee myself in the tree biz but Im 31 years old and Ive been working in the trucking and excavating biz meself for more years than I care for the family biz and I am very much learned in the ways of an old tart like this. My father ran a tree crew in the late 70s into the early 80s and he has been giving me little tid bitts along the way about climbing and rigging and the first thing he has stressed is getting used to the spikes and the ballance and manuvers involved. sounds like this guy that has much to say about nothing is an apple tree pruner.:newbie:

Dammit, i hate when the idiot agrees with me.:hmm3grin2orange:

Anyway, blakesmaster, sorry, may have come off a bit harsh, i've just spent the last month trying to train a forestry college taught rope climber to use spikes after he almost took off his arm while chunking a stem, and it isn't going well. There was some frustration in that post.

No harm, no foul, beowulf. I know where you're at with these spikeless pseudo climbers and knew what you were getting at. In regards to the OP's original post, spike climbing off the get-go probably isn't a bad idea, seeing how he was mainly talking about running up a tree to put in a rope and pull it over. If that's all someone ever wants to do, then strap 'em on and do it. My point was that there is much to be gleaned from learning to trust and use your rope and saddle from the start before you begin adding extra tools like spikes, webbing slings, chainsaws, etc. IMO, someone aspiring to be a well rounded climber should figure out the basics of maneuvering in a tree and then start adding equipment.

BTW, your PM box is full, Beowulf. I'd still like the opportunity to come see you guys work.
