Here's what hung above my grandfather's home-built wood stove:

If it's warmth that you desire,
Poke your wife and not the fire.

If its fun you want from life,
Poke some other fellows wife.

Poke his wife or Poke your own,
But leave this G-d D-mn fire alone!

He could set the damper and flue just-so so that he'd put one log in at night and have enough coals in the morning to start the fire back up.

Grandpa lived in a one-room duck shack in Northern WI where he lived off of what he could catch, kill, or grow. Running water was a 5-gallon pail down to the neighbor's spring. No phone, either.

But his workshop was bigger than the house and he could build/fix anything. I miss that man...
