Maybe another silly question. Stihl offers 2 types of air filters - flocked and steel mesh - which is better and why?

My 290 has the flocked and my 030 AV has the mesh, I want to buy a spare for each saw. Thanks in advance for your advise.:dizzy:

The decision is easier than you think - the wire mesh hasn't been offered for about 18 years! As for "flocked, it's now (9-10 years) "fleece" - as in a woven nylon material.

The fine wire mesh never did keep out the very fine material, and blocked very easily. The "flocked" version which was nylon "fluff" stuck on a bigger wire mesh was "o.k." but the flocking comes off the mesh as the mesh corrodes. The "fleece" versions are the best and last for a very long time if cleaned in soapy water and blown out now and then.

Thanks Andy - one more question. Are fleece versions available for my 030 or do I need to keep buying flocked ones off "evil-bay"?

They are available from your Stihl dealer.

The complete air filter is 1113 120 1603 and lists for about $31.

If your screws, choke etc are in good condition (not sure if they are interchangeable from the very old filters though) then just buy the front and back covers for about $11 each. Part numbers 1113 120 1612 and 1602. They show as "flocked" in the parts list but when you get then they will be fleece.
