I had some ideas for the site and was wanting you guys input. In the residential tree area, with this new software, I can actually make forums in forums. Such as if you hit the residential tree area and you see all the questions people are asking right now. If you were to hit it the possible new way. It would break down different trees. Such as an apple or fruit tree section, oak, maple, etc. Then you would click on that and then find questions on the specific trees. Is this too much clicking and you like the current format? Give me your feedback.

I think its a good idea. It seems we get a lot of repeat questions about specific trees. If people could search for each type of tree first, they may find their answer before posting a question thats already been handled.

I agree the only worry I had is too many click throughs to get to where you need to be. When arboristsite has a slow day it will slow down the process for everyone.

I dont know about breking it down by genus, maybe region? I could see "Fruit trees for eating".

How about setting one up as a FAQ forum that you can move stuff into as it gets asked often, cut and paste some of the best replies togethe...edit for size....add links to places like USDA, USFS pages with good grafics....

In chainsaws you could brak it down by make, Sthil, Husky, Shindaiwa....

Comercial into prunning, rigging, planting, climbing, but then you get back to too many devisions. I think if each just had a FAQ forum you would be able to siplify it. "What do I do about my..." Go here http//,,jfis9dfwn then if you have any more...

Also the good thing about the current format is that the new and current posts stay in the front. If everything was subdivided then some things would be missed unless we checked every forum. Brett is right though there are a lot of repeats

Yeah, I know. I dont know why its so hard to read. It seems very difficult to read. There is even a search feature on arboristsite. I also get emails, around 3 a day, which ask about trees. I even state right on the residential tree area that I dont accept emails. Rocket science I guess. Some write me and tell me how hard it is to post. We dont seem to have any problems posting, do we? I think this software is by far the best on the net and is much easier to use than other forums. Oh well, to each their own.

This is the best setup I have seen so far so I guess dont be in a hurry to change it, no matter how user friendly you make something there is always someone who cannot figure it out. ;)

If I dont get this one running it will be a real small domain. Things are looking up though, I got the fuel line fixed just in time for the recoil to blow up, so once I get all forty feet of it rolled back in I will give you an update:jester:

Those were the days!!

I think we have a new look every year if you go back. Just 3 different upgrades to software though. (This being the 3rd).

Well actually it is coming together. Was a little rougher a few hours ago.. but somebody behind scene is working hard on this by looks of it. Keep it up.. we have faith..

I don't have a problem with it Darin, upgrades and change is a fact of life. It is like any change you either adapt or be overwhelmed. I have not figured out the credit thing yet still waiting on a hat:confused::)

Since the previous design of the forum was organized completely FLAT. and very WIDE, I think I kinda make sense to add sub forums within each forum....and a sub forum could be the same sub for many main forums too....like a Chain saw sub forum, can be the same for many of the main forums, Like TreeClimbing, Firewood and heating, logging, etc....
Same with Hydraulics can become a sub forum since there are so many specific questions about hydraulics, at least with in the Firewood heating forum.....

Sub forums will require more maintenance from the moderators though....so it wont come for free....

I do not think there should be more than one sub level to a main forum....
see my post from a few days back....cant find it with search engine...just posting a pic I used....

That looks great I wonder how many threads would be started in the wrong thread though?

Wonder how many are today as it is!!

So multiply it by the number of sub forums.. for good measure square that and maybe close to answer.

From that perspective likely a bad idea.. unless moderators had a switch to uncollapse the sub-forums easily and then move the messages around as needed.

People do not like clicking additional links, which subforums will do to you. We can do them, I have done some check on that...it doesn't work too good. I might get rid of some of the less active forums to make the main page shrink a bit.
