I told you long ago if I ever got a chance to play with a MS280 I would let you know how those saws are. Well I got lucky and bought one for 50.00 last week. Fried cylinder, busted manifold was the cause.

Today I put it all back together and used all Stihl parts, I'm not much on after market anything. I don't pinch pennies when it comes to my own saws. After spending 50.00 to get the saw and tossing another 214.00 for jug/piston and odds and in's I got myself a fairly new looking saw. I took it out the log pile and played with it for many cuts and I must say you are correct, the 280 feels much better than the 290, though it should comparing costs. This saw is smooth in the cut and walks right on through wood with ease. It cuts quite well indeed. That said as promised you now have some in hand feed back on the 280. Here's a few pics of my 50.00 MS280 that I tossed another 214.00 in and I think for a total of 264.00 I got a right nice saw.

Note

That black label on top of that saw is a dealer sticker from where the guy bought it. Had he bought it from me I may have given him a 100.00 for it, the low life,LOL

Think you'll use it doing any side jobs?...:hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

Side job paid for it,LOL Yup that thing runs and cuts much better than I expected. Its the red head stepchild of the Stihl line up. Not a big seller but it is indeed a nice saw..

This is cool, it isn't even a "C something" - try to sell more 280s, and less 290s - your costumers will thank you, eventually......:greenchainsaw:

Nice saw! I love mine. Nice broad powerband.
You are quite right, I was surprized how it opened up in the cut and pulled great. I like it. Has a sweet power band indeed. Its the first one I've ever had a chance to play with and I'm like dayummmmmmm nice cutting saw.

I kept my word to ya didn't I ole feller. You now got some in hand feed back on those saws. It is one nice cutting saw, no question about it. Will use mine as a demo around here and get them babies out the door, yup I'm sneaky,LOL

So how does it compare to a 260 or 5100 in power to you Thall?

Mine did loosen up a bit after it broke in, but now nearly as much as the 441 and 660 did.

I have run a few 026s, they are no-where close to the 5100S - HUGE difference - more than the specs say, imo.....

260 won't touch it, the 5100 may have some trouble in bigger wood with this saw. This saw pulls great, I was pushing on it and it kept right on. Mind you now, its cutting with a brand new cylinder and piston. As it breaks in I'll toss it up side my 5100 and see how they compare. I'm really impressed the pull power this little saw puts out, nice power band indeed..
