There was a short run of rings that Baileys had that were made of the wrong material. It was not the design of the grooved ring. Have you seen my 372BB and 066BB run? They both have the grooved rings. There's nothing wrong with them. It's just hard to dispell the bad mojo after a few bad parts go out.

The reason why I ask is that I have their 440BB kit on my saw, complete with grooved rings. I used the included base gasket, etc.. 6 tanks later cold compression is 135 and hot is a smidge under 125. I just figured the low numbers were due to the rings.

Not necessarily. Have you checked the squish? It could be that the combustion chamber is larger than stock. I haven't messed with a 044BB myself.

Not yet. What would be good parameters? If it is currently too great should I go gasketless with some 1194?

So getting back to the original basic information that Bailey's is interested in... Brad, how easily did the cylinder and piston install on a regular 026? Did the skirts have to be trimmed? Any issues with the stock base gasket? Spark plug threads look good?

No skirt trimming. It bolted right on using a stock thickness gasket. There is a slight issue due to the domed piston, where the squish was tighter at the inner edge of the squish band. But I left it as is and bolted it right on. I've addressed this issue with Gregg and expect it to be corrected by production time. All it would take is a tapered squish band, rather than flat. The casting of the combustion chamber and machining of the squish band were excellent though, a huge improvement. The entire casting looked very nice. I suppose I should have bolted it on unmodded just to see how it ran with stock ports, but you know me:)

I wonder if this one can catch a 5100 that I keep hearing about........

Are you going to re port your 346NE so it will run with Gink...........Beware of rev limited saws .......
.

That 346 of Brads got beat by a fancy chain. The Ericjeeper 346 that tied Brads.. Was Brads saw. Not my EHP..
I have yet to out cut Brads 346 with my saw.

Is that the reason Andyshine won too, Fancy Chains:givebeer::)

I keep hearing about this chain that appeared for racing and then disappeared. I didn't see it. Was it a full blown race chain? Where did it come from? I need to get off my butt and learn to make some real chains, lol.

All you had to do was walk back to my truck:cheers:

Well I guess I'm sorry I went to a saw race with a sharp chain, I'll try not to let it happen again:greenchainsaw:

went to a gtg last weekend and had the same thing happen to me! Said his was a stock 7900 with good chain not taken down at the rivets but a nice hook. He beat my slinger built 460 . granted it is a used 460 but still blowin 185 psi. Couldnt believe it. But he ( grampatractor)just barley got me. I guess im going to make me a chain!!!!!

Being serious here, when you raced that 5100 at wkpoors gtg you beat it with a time of 4.75, that 5100 ran it in a time of 4.87 in 8x8 2 cuts, and it was done with a guy that never ran that saw before, until that race. Now I've run the saw quite a bit cutting firewood, so I have a good feeling for the saw better than one that has never touched it... Maybe you were out chained maybe you weren't we'll never know.

But I do know I was running a stock carb with airfilter plus the horrible rev limiter, you had advantages too. I find it hard to believe that with you having a square grinder that you didn't have a very sharp chain also.

I know these GTG's are fun and I want to keep it that way, the 5100 is not a all out race saw. As the builder told me "It's not a barn burner, just a good woods ported saw" It's obvious that your 260 and 346 and my 5100 are very close to each other, and it's kinda fun that way:cheers:

This is probably one of the best statments I have read on AS...It was from troutfisher's thread a few weeks ago about chains...

The square chisel is gaining about 16% over the round, and the worked over chain is gaining about 20% over the stock square, so 36% gained over new round chisel. That is more than most can get out if a woods port. I think many people neglect chain when looking for speed out of a saw, when heading for a GTG, or any kind of competition.

I agree entirely. It's all bout having fun. When you get beat, it just drives you to try harder. That's fun.

About the rev limiter. That's only a tuning handicap. The saw's not going to e any slower in the cut.

Yes, my chains are sharp, but they're far from a race chain. I've got a lot to learn and a lot of work to do to them.

I love the close competition. It definately keeps it interesting. It wouldn't be any fun if no one had comparable saws.
