In this vid I compare 36" wide nose vs 36" narrow nose, 30" wide nose vs 30" narrow nose. I was kinda surprised by the results.

36" wide - 49.2 & 49.3
36" narrow - 52.4 & 52.7
30" wide - 45.8
30" narrow - 49.0

doing the math it works out that wide nose is like 6-7% faster on both the 36" and 30". Not a lot but interesting and surprising.

I have seen somewhere on here before that wide nose bars are faster than the narrow. What will you be doing with all the bars?

yeah that was me. I just added a short intro to the vid.

conducting more tests and then selling them. You wanting something in particular?

Also if you guys have some ideas on tests you want to see, let me know.

As of right now I plan on doing the following...

1) 20es sthl vs 20" sugihara vs 25es vs 28es vs 28tsumura vs 30es vs 32es vs 36es vs 36tsumura in same piece of wood like 18" wide (about max length a 20" bar can do on the 660). Wanting to see if the various length bars really do make a difference in cut time

2) 25es stihl vs 28es stihl vs 28 tsumura vs 30es vs 32es vs 36es vs 36 tsumura in same piece of wood - approx 23" wide (max a 25" bar can do) Same idea.

3) new 36" skip test - RS vs rsf vs rmf vs RSLF vs RSLH (half skip) vs RD vs a modified RD half skip I'm working on right now...takes forever to take the whole thing apart and put back together as a half skip lol

4) 28" stihl light bar vs 28" tsumura comparison. I have some thoughts on these two after using them for a while now

5) 36" stihl vs 36" tsumura comparison - same thing.

6) 20" sugi hara vs 20" stihl - same thing

7) some Rapid Duro vs Rapid Super comparison cuts. Maybe add in my custom Rapid Duro Half skip.

8) some 7pin vs 8pin comparisons

Definitely worthy of a sticky!
I would consider that Whitetail in your avatar worthy of a, "sticky."

Bigger roller out there and easier radius to turn on the wide nose maybe?

Very interesting, and thanks for posting this thread! :D:clap:

Thanks for all the info.

I'm not surprised that RS was the fastest chain, but if you test the non-skip square file it will be a good deal faster. I'm currently using it on 20 and 24" bars. Would like to see that comparison if possible (24" bar?). (My 044 loves the stuff on both 20 & 24" bars).

It would also be interesting to see if different powerheads show similar results. The 660 is a torque monster, while the 70 cc class saws rely more on speed.

With a smaller powerhead, half and full skip may give a benefit on a bar length smaller than on the 660.

I'm surprised at the difference a wide nose bar makes (although I expected some difference). I would expect less of a difference on shorter bars? That would also be a nice test.

your welcome.

yeah im trying to get my hands on some RSL (sq. grd. full comp) in 36" 050. Got the half skip version already and a new full skip for the next test. And I fully agree full comp sq. grd. would be faster. You can see that just by going off RSLF being faster than RSF. But half skip might eat their lunch? we shall see!?!?

nearly impossible to find a 20" wide nose. I just couldn't find one. I could find a 25" wide nose in 063 but not a narrow nose in 063. I could find a narrow nose 050 but not a wide nose. Only way to be fair is to use the same chain. Never even seen a wide nose 28". And since stihl stopped making them in 2014. I doubt i will. I got the last 30" wide nose from any distributor or stihl hdqtr's. So i guess they aren't that popular.

Awesome bars! Lots of money in bars and chains their. Nice comparison, I really like the Stihl 28" .50 Gauge Rollomatic ES bar. That's what I have been running on my big saws and they hold up really well
