In respect to that first statement, I believe you can buy Stihl parts and accessories remotely, just not the powerheads.  That was the distinct impression given me by a very high quality dealer within the past 6 months at any rate.

Rocky,
you are right. I did not mention what brand I would look for if not Stihl. I have used Oregon bars and chains in the past. I have had ok luck with them. Sprokets, again right. I have used the replaceable head bars.

It all depends on whether or not you know where to look.

just a note. if u change sprockets ,dont try the oregon power match ,without
checking for a good fit. they just dont fit sometime.. if the bar is shot ,u probably need to replace that[sprocket] first.

It was a tiny little hole-in-the-wall shop, but he had one of everything (up to 088/36") on the shelf, new, and some 090s and other vintage saws, some old new roller file guides, etc.  He directly answered to my direct question that he was able to send me anything I wanted but for the saws themselves, which were prohibited.  Chains and bars were specifically mentioned.  We didn't discuss lawn care equipment.

Naturally, I wouldn't mailorder anything as a rule because that doesn't serve the community at all, but there are exceptions to most every rule.

I get all my Stihl parts from somewhere in the CONUS because the Stihl dealer in Honolulu is a useless SOB. I have parts on order from 5, 3 and 2 years ago. Never did get a single part I
ordered. He never had a part I needed in stock either, except for
bars and chains. I refer all people who ask me about Stihl parts to the mainland US dealer that I order from. I am planning on opening my own saw shop when I retire from the tree biz in a few years.

Sorry Tony, but the PowerMatch sprockets fit just fine if you have the right size. What you might have a problem with is making an Oregon SMALL spline fit up with a Stihl MINI spline. In that case you are relegated to using the OEM mini spline although GB used to, and probably still does make a mini spline rim.

It`s cheaper over the life of about 3 rims to just change out the Stihl clutch drum that forces you to use a mini spline for a GB or Oregon that use a small spline rim.

Glen, that sounds like a great shop.
