Lightweight saws-- 180 v.s. 401 v.s. 346

Dont read or hear as much about the smaller models, so I thought this would be interesting. Ive heard good things about the 180 and the 401, and noticed the Echo is also very light with some decent power numbers.
These arent the big boys, so try and leave brand loyalty bias out of the equation (yeah right ;) )

The 180 seems like a good little saw from the few cuts I've made with one. I'm still partial to the Echo saws, though, having had really good experiences with them over the years - you just can't kill them.

Still haven't run a 401, but I'll probably buy one before too long. They seem like a durable small saw, being magnesium and all.

That's a pretty short list of lightweight saws. I have a 180 and I like it (for the price.)

I wouldn't class it as an "aspirational item" though. I'd much rather have a rear handled MS200.

No point in voting here, as the MS200 and Husky 339xp is not on the list.

I know little about the saws listed, but surely none of them is state of the art designs. Beeing forced to choose one, I would probably have taken the Dolmar, even though it is an outdated design.

You are correct.I just got my ms200(rear handle)and it is awsum.I will keep my cs346 for a back up saw.You get what you pay for,I did.

I agree you get what you pay for, for the most part. What I meant was, I was trying to keep the pricerange as level and as reasonable as possible; sort of entry-level I guess.

Yes, but they definately are light-weight, even lighter than those listed, I believe.....
What I know is that I wan't a MS200 or a 339xp, but I really don't know why......:hmm3grin2orange:

My vote for the best lightweight saw would be for either the Poulan S25, or a Homelite Super2.

McCulloch Power Mac 6 at less than 7 lbs fully fueled and ready to go.

How many do you want? You pay the freight, I tell guys with broken macs of this class to send them to you and not the dumpster. Can't give them away.

There is or was an outfit in Cali called Wallenburg Sales that had a bunch of old PM-6A's. I bought one of them. It was gutless compared to my old 020 Supers and 335 Huskys, and weighed mid 7 lb, not mid 6's as the guy said. Sent it back. Same guy also sold me a mini stump grinder with a Partner P100 powerhead. It runs well.

Instead of throwing them in the dumpster they should part them out and sell the pieces on eBay....or put it on eBay whole as a parts saw.

I like my Ehco they take a licking. Good novice saw.
Hey RBTREE, Never seen a mini stump grinder. Are they any good? Whats the biggest stump would you tackle with it?

Manual, they work, but poorly....not enough weight bearing down on the stump. I once did a 3+ foot cedar stump with it...was no other access. It took a couple hours.

The Alpine Magnum is a totally different design, and all reports on it are great.

Bingo, sap..Harry is a nice old guy....
