Ok guys..I want to soup of my recently aquired used 660..I saw some big bore kits on Baileys for it..but not sure I wanna dump another $120 out and then need to send it to a shop to get it turned right..so muffler mods..any ideas? I'm gonna be running a 36" bar with a 7 tooth rim sprocket to get a little more low end..help me out here..

If you can re tune after a muffler mod, then you should be able to re tune after any cylinder mods. Why the need for a dealer tune?

There are a gazillion muff mod posts for the the 066/660.

My advice is to open up the inner muffler cage, then open up the existing single port. That'll give you all the flow you need.

But someone will be along to tell you to shell out big bucks on a DP cover that doesn't make any more power than a modded single port.

Don't buy a BB kit to replace a good OEM, unless you want to play with porting. OEM is much better. Pull the muffler off, take off the front cover, rip out the cage, and open up the port outlet.

No offense but if you can't tune your saw then you should not be doing anything to it. Besides the best "mod" is a sharp chain. Once you can prove you know how to sharpen a chain you won't need any modification, the 660 has plenty of power for a 36" bar in all but professional falling situations. Even then it cuts just fine.

Most dealers won't touch a saw that has been modded. I know I don't like messing with them unless it's mine. Muffler mods are pretty simple. You just need to open them up some. Do a search here for 066 muffler mod and you should be busy for a few days. BB kits are good replacements for a scored piston and junk cylinder but I wouldn't waste the money on one unless it's needed.

The mod was just an idea...I just wanted to see whats out there and what you guys thought..one of my buddies has a stock 460 that spanked my 660 with a new full skip chain(we both had 28" bars on and 8 tooth rim spockets at the time) as we were bucking some 24ish inch ash..I was a little disappointed hence why I wanted to look into modding it out a little..this will not be an everyday use saw for me..and when it does get used it will be for bucking logs and doing low cuts prior to stumping..nothing arial..I respect those of you that get into the monster work with cranes and stuff..but I dont have the clientel, the experience or the desire to take work that big..not at this stage anyways..
I appreciate the input..I get into some stuff once in a great while thats too big for my 440 with the 25" on it..thats why I picked up this used 660 and decided to put the 36" her..thanks again..btw and happy new yrs..

I just opened up the stock outlet to probably 3/4", then cut the entire front off the baffle cage and put a dual port cover on it. Gains alot of throttle response from modding the muffler. I would do it.
A 460 against a 660 both stock? Wow, you should be toasting a 460. Maybe the rings are giving out on you. Whats your compression?

Depends on the size of wood too. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the 460 beat or kept up with a 660 in wood up to 28", the 660 just because its bigger doesn't mean it'll cut faster, now put both of them in some 32" or bigger wood and the story will change. My ported 371 will beat my ported 395 in wood up to 24" very easily, but hang a 36" bar on both, burry the bars, and you'll see a different story. The big saw is made for big wood.

Best thing you can do to it IMO. I don't get why someone would pull a good OEM P/C and replace it with cheap inferior product for a few cc's gained. Nothing against doing that if the OEM P/C are toast.

Do the ultimate muffler mod..pipe it:D
