Hey now,

I'm interested in knowing what you consider to be your two best pieces of climbing gear you purchased this year. I was thinking about this today while climbing a Ponderosa. Mine would be....

PETZL Pantin- This thing makes my job soooo much easier. Everytime I use it I can't believe how well it functions.

Silky Zubat hand saw- Sharp, yikes.....nice low profile...just feels right.

I'd have to say the Grcs- paid for it self first time out. Second would be the new truck. So glad not to be forking chips out anymore. And yes third( there's always room) - Sugoi- bad mutha phucka!

The Blaze was also a good purchase, but since I have 120' of it and most of the trees I do don't require any more than my 80' Hi-Vee, I don't use it too much. When I do use it, it's nice to have.

so you guys like the pantin? i wanted to get one, but when I looked into it, i found some bad reviews about it. but I still need something to help my feet climbing, so do you recommend?

oh, and my best purchase this year is my homemade crotch saver, climbings a smooth ride now!

Sizzle, I figger that if you get just the right size piece of bamboo, thread the rope thru it and then lash the boo to your boot you won't have to buy a Pantin. Surely, we could find a way to make it work? Heck, I think I'll try it. :dizzy:

If my homemade big shot raised a few eyebrows, this oughta push 'em over the edge. :p

I think besides heavy equipment the Sherrill Retreever Was the best small tool i purchased.

Sizzle,

Where did you get any bad feedback on the Pantin? Be specific, what was wrong? I've had mine ever since they first came on the market and wouldn't give it up.

Did they complain about the rope kicking out? Thats the only crabbing I've ever read. There shouldn't be any problem though, that is how it's supposed to work.

Tom, I read a review someone put on the internet that someone here had a link to, and then a few posts (one by TM) about how the rope would kick out so often that it was not worth using. But I didnt want to make it sound like a bad product. I desperately want one if its worth buying, but I want to make sure that its worth the money before I put it on my wish list. Do I take it that you recommend it? Do the little teeth tear up the rope at all? Is it feasable to leave it on while working . . . etc?

right now Im using a rope grab strapped to my foot, but I have to use an alan wrench and another wrench to get it off the rope if I want to use it in the tree. Then I have a bunch of loose parts that could fall. So, I want something that can "pop" out, but not too often.

The problem with the rope "popping" out is related to technique. I don't have a problem with it. As far as leaving it on to work goes, I usuall forget that I have it on, and sometimes realize it's still on my foot when I get home. No probs there either. I recommend it.

The P is one of the best values going.

The P needs to be mouonted on your foot in the right place. The top of the P must be just below the knob of your ankle bone. The rope must tail behind ankle. If not, the ankle will cant to the side and the rope is more likely to kcik out.

If the rope kicks out, clip a biner into the hole-see picture

Mine is from the first run so the stirrup strap would slip a little. See the metal slider that I put on to keep it snug?

the two-part clip is hard to put on with winter gloves. I had a metal spring clip that I sewed on.

Cut the end of the strap at an angle and melt the flats a little to have a stiff tab for clipping.

I've been with climbers after work and heard the nice, familiar jingle of gear. They have the P on, just like spurs on a cowboy...I love it!

sizzle,

If you buy a P and don't like it, let me know, I'll buy it from you.

Tools of the trade

Thanks for all the feedback, you guys and gals are great.

Yes, the Pantin has a way with it, the first few times I used it I did have the rope come out, there is a technique (for me) that has been keeping it in. It works like a charm. I also tie up my pant leg for minimal interference. I might be wrong, but it seems the farther you get up the rope, the more rope weight, the better it slides up....I could be wrong.

I'm going to purchas the (GRCS?) tool, but need to have some more cash o rama before.

Thanks again for the feedback, It's very valuable to me in deciding what to purchase next. I really appreciate this board and it's member contributions.

Big shot

Red Bull,

I also have to agree about the big shot. I still have much practice to use it better. It seems I either launch it 250 feet above where I'm aiming or it gets tangled up and ricochets toward me, houses or innocent bystanders. Great tool.

Thanks for the info.

I also use the Blaze, I love the high visibility, it feels right with the split tail.

my carbon fibre spikes and addidas clima-cool t-shirts for climbing

i want the blaze but im trying real hard to cut down on my spending at the moment. i have enough climbing gear to last a life time as it is
