Finished the top end(new piston and cylinder) on my 044 and cut for about 2 hours.
Yeah luvin' life....
Then it sounds like someone dropped a bunch of marbles in her.
The coil came loose and wiped out the flywheel. Not happy.:(
Anybody ever see this before?
Any idea what I'm lookin at in parts cost?

No way to figure out how much its going to cost you 'till you look things over very carefully. The damage could be limited to the coil and flywheel but you could have conceivably taken out the case also. I'd be looking closely at your coil mounts..... I'd also be concerned with bearings, and the case surrounding the bearings. If its just flywheel and coil, you got off easy! Stuff happens, eh?

Bummer...

Even if you've damaged the case mounts, they can be rebuilt with aluminum inserts and JB weld.

All Stihl coils are supposed to be secured by the correct screws with washers, torqued down, and loctite 242. Degrease the screw threads and holes before using the loctite or it's pretty much useless.

heck, I use and Industrial degreaser/cleaner - trichlorethelyene... in a spray can... instant degreaser, bad to breathe... You can use carb cleaner, but it can soften paint/rubber and it's also pretty bad stuff.

Thanks for that, that's my issue. Some degreasers still leave a residue and othes can completely stuff rubber.
I've found out the hard way. :censored:

The mounts all look good.Another reason to check every single screw and bolt before reassembly, even if you didn't touch them.

I found an old 039-390 plastic case type under the bench that had the exact magneto in it.
What I'm wondering is if the flywheel might work also? They look very close.

Nope.. the flywheel is completely different - look at the inner taper. You need the correct 1128 flywheel - not hard to find.

I had an 064 do that main bearing is toast. You can wiggle the crank front to back quite a bit. I would check them very closely.

Bearings seem tight.Luckily I had it at idle when it let loose. The only damage I can find is the flywheel and the mag.
Is there any difference in years I should watch for?
Thanks for all the input.

Well I got my flywheel in the mail today.ebay special--$18 delivered. Not bad.
But I look inside and it says Stihl and the part number 1128 400 1214.
Then it says "made in japan".How many other parts on this 044 and for that fact other stihl saws are actually made in japan?
I guess that's better then china or mexico though.

very few... The flywheel is the only one I know about, other than the older Zama carbs.
