Well semi-pros got a call on saws today asked the guy his price "he didn't know make an offer" They were a ways away so i passed. I have never dealt with that well and it can be a waste of time. The legendary antique dealer RALPH-E told me offer them $1 or tell them they are selling so they know what they want. Just seems to be a fishing game to me. So what do you guys do when this comes up?? :yoyo:

I've read that about 4 times and I've yet to understand what your talking about. Not making fun, just don't understand what your saying there. Can you put some more detail in that, I know Havvey, your gonna say can't you read and the answer is yes but I can't figure out what your saying there, clearify that post abit...

If they start off playing games, play right along. When the old " Idunno whatllya give" starts I shoot them a rediculously low price. If they don't know what they want for it how can they get mad? I hate the "horse trading" part of a transaction. When i get the item chipped down to $100 I'm happy but later I always think "He would have taken $75" :bang:

You cant get a price on the object for sale from the owner (they don't know make offer etc) You don't know if he wants $50 or $500 I cannot drive 1-2 hours when the price may be way out of reach. Always seemed common around here. When i sell an object i put a price on it and add a little example $550: buyer "will you take $500?" ME "yes":yoyo:

Awwwwwwwwwwwwww ok, I see what you mean now. True, to hell with a deal like that. If they won't give you a striaght price it pretty well says if you do drive there it may be gone to the highest bidder, hell with that, thats poor business.......................

Usually if it's over the phone and the seller doesn't know what they have and it's quite I few saws I tell them to figure on $10 a piece unless I get there and they're real nice.

If they agree to that then it's worth a long drive.

I like that $10, will you start buying saws for me?? My real issues is these wingnuts that you don't know if they want $10 or $1000?? I'll pm you on some other stuff.:yoyo:  :buttkick:

I usually only use the $10 method if I'm talking over the phone and it involves a long drive to go and get the saws.

Myself, I know if somebody wanted to take everything I'd sell them all for $18 a piece. But, I haven't found any takers. I'd even throw my loose parts in the deal.

Went to look at a car once, they set it up so everybody was there at once. I was first there took it out and drove it listed at $700 OBO I handed the guy $700 cash. "Well this guy already offerd me that without driving it, so why don't you guys write down what you want to give me and high bid wins." B. S.!!!!!!!!!!!! I came to buy a car, not attend an auction, I looked at the other guy, "You want it, it's yours!" got in the car and left. You don't know if its a bait and switch or if they brought in a ringer but I refused to play the game and was not going to let the jerk make any more money off of me!!
YEAH YEAH, I heard all about the OBO crap already, but if I offer the dude his asking price right off, first come first serve, right?

My experience : it's very difficult to do business with people who do not know what they want ; no matter if they are a seller or a purchaser.

Painfull discussions and very often waste of valuable time. Not my kind of customers really.

the "i'd rather keep it" technique

Not sure this applies to the matter at hand, but--

Here’s what has worked for me several times:

Doesn’t matter if they have a price or not, I say: “instead of me insulting you with an offer, I figure everybody’s got a “I’d rather keep it” price…you know, if I can’t get $x out of this, I’d rather keep it.” So, tell you what….you tell me your $x amount, and I’ll take it or leave it right now, cash.”

It cuts to the chase, and has worked to my benefit many times—their 'keep it' price was less than I’d have offered. Sometimes they don’t see the wisdom of this approach and won’t play—go ahead and insult me, they say. So, I do, in spades. They usually don’t like that, but I just laugh and tell ‘em you TOLD me to insult ya!

And sure, there are times when I walk away, but I always get to leave on a friendly basis.
