JPS, why would you go with CopperWeld and not straight copper?

CopperWeld works great for wire antennas due to AC skin-effect... the current travels thru the copper and not the steel primarily.

I'm 15 years removed from setting up star grounds for VHF stations in sandy environs. ( Don't key up, I'me going to go pee on the ground rods)

I was implying that I don't do LP, because i know enough to know I don't know enought do design a proper grounding system. My familiarity is from reading up on the subject so I cam give people my informed opinion. Many of the papers I've read speak to using copper weld.

So I just asked my Dad (W9FTE, AAR5NQ) and he said he would want a big fat copper braid to dissipate heat better.

My understanding is that the movement of electrons was a surface effect in all cases.

How are you with a soldering gun Erik? I want to canabolize a small radio to make a dedicated helmet radio with PTT on the earmuff.

I build my own radios from scratch (when I have the time), so I think I could handle it ;)

In the systems we installed, we used braided copper cable that was about 3/8" diameter.

The braided copper would also withstand the constant motion better than solid would.
