i have 2 pains in my body. i figured they must be fairly common amongst the tree industry... can anyone tell me what they are and how do i cure/relieve them? thanks.

1) a pain is in my elbo/arm area from holding out the climbing saw alot and using the machete alot.

2) a pain in my butt cheek area. it's not the lower spine, but feels like more inside the cheek/pelvis area. it acts up occasionally when i lift something the wrong way and takes 2 days to get back to normal. someone told me maybe the sciatic(sp?) nerve, but i don't get the "electric shock: down the leg. the pain shocks me from the butt cheek to my lower back instead.

anyone have these?

I got sick once cuz I ate to much at a fast food restaurant. Went to the Dr's office and he said: "It Will Pass"! :hmm3grin2orange: HC

I am not a doctor but i was in a hospital once so I have some professional advice for you:

Your salesmen/subcontractors are not surgeons, but they have used a machete. If you have any body parts that are causing you concern, ask one of them to chop it off with a machete. If the problem runs up and down the body, then a basal cut at the ankles may be required. :chainsaw:

This may sound extreme, but I'm sure you'll agree that it's for the best. After all, that's how you manage trees, isn't it? :buttkick:

The elbow problem sounds like some kind of repetitive motion injury, like tennis elbow.
This will upset a lot of guys on here, but it might help to stop one handing the saw. Change up your style and cut bigger pieces with two hands and use a rope. You can use your feet to get up the tree, instead of your arms too.
I don't use a machete at all, but there may be ways to avoid that too.
The wise cracks posted earlier are because you're asking the dumbest group in the world for medical advice, what you need to do is go to the second dumbest group, doctors, and ask them.
I always though it might be smart to go to a sports medicine joint, to ask about many of the types of problems we arborist have.

Problem #1 will cure itself if you stop flailing on yourself like it's an x-rated amusement park. Problem #2 will probably go away if you pull your head out of your a$$.

diagnose this !

Treeminator , sounds like tennis or golfers elbow, strained tendons on the inside or outside edge of the elbow . I suffer from the same thing , point of pain accupuncture and a neoprene support works for me . as for yer butt could be a hip playing up get it checked out with yer doc

for those who gave legit responses, i thank you. for those who didn't, i don't see why you do. i brought up a normal subject that most tree guys had or will probably have at some point down the road.

i think tennis elbow sounds about right. still not sure about the butt cheek pain.

And????

Get a saw with a different starting pull than a craftsman or whatever you are using. This helped me get rid of an elbow thing. I switched from echo to Husky climbing saw, the pull angle was different. It helped.

that makes sense, but the elbow hurting is not the one i pull with. (right handed. right elbow hurts)

Mike I agree with you 100%>>>sounds like tennis elbow. Should see a doctor. There is a strap for tennis elbow that by applying pressure close to the elbow across the nerve shortens it and relieves the pain. Sports injuries are congruent with Arb injuries. Mike gives good advise when he says see a doctor. He is the specialist here. I wish you well and hope your pain leaves you.

PS>>>the butt pain one sounds like a hamstring pain.

As some have said elbow sound like tendonitz, ice it after work, ibrofine, rest unfortunatly. After better ease back into it. Also try and use differnt posisition, when useing climbing saw, so you not away using same positions for cutting.
pain is in cheek, but good chance is form of sciatica, had it for 20 years now.
does not have to go down leg to be scatica. Its cause from budging disk in back. mine would move from cheek, hip , groin. depending how i layed, back never hurt. Again ice lower back after work even if it does not hurt there, thats where problem could be, called refered pain. Alivie/naprosne helps me. Chropratores help some, even accupuncture for some if gets real bad. remember bend knees when lifting too, and do streching. I know bummer to get old euh. sorry for the bad spelling!

when you go to the doctor for elbow, ask him for AirCast strap for you're elbow. that should help too if it is tendonitis. you only need to where it when working, deffinitly helps for tendonits.

Repetative Stress Disorder

Elbow is repetative stress. Ice and OTC pain meds ( your choice ). Back could be lots of things. I found an awesome Physical Therapist who fixes broken people Ie: Tree Guys. Turns out my lower back problems come from my rib ends being out of joint, which started when I threw out my right shoulder pruning Apple trees. It's all about back up systems. Tweek one thing another thing takes over. You get old enough and it ends in your butt.

try two scales one for one foot one for the other see if your favoring one side this could be irritating it more, see about a spinal adjustment from a chiropractor

I've got/had the similar things both from tree work and sports injuries.
If its real bad go and see an orthopedic doctor, one that specializes in sports injuries, soft tissue injuries, and a registerd physiotherapist, for a bit of home remedy, read on:

Elbow pain right on the outside on the bony bit, I've traced it to drop starting the tree saw, ice it to calm it down, may take a while especially if you've got to keep working, then find the sore spot and rub it for about five minutes at least once a day, yes it will hurt, this is what the physiotherapists do, its called deep friction and they do it to increase the blood flow in that area as tendons and ligaments don't have a lot of blood circulating around them. Also it helps break up deep bruising and/or any scar tissue you may have in the area that is keeping things tight. Stretch your forearm by holding your arm out, palm down, flop your wrist and use your other hand to bend your hand down til you feel the stretch all the way to your elbow. After that, MORE ICE!! Those braces are good if you have to keep working before you get it under control.

Butt pain, as others have said, sciatic pain can travel all over or referred pain from another source. I had lower back pain, radiating out to my hips and I couldn't sit for very long. Went to the orthopedic surgeon, got sent to the physio, she checked my back from neck to pelvis and legs all the way to the toes. The problem was originating from the middle of my back being very tight from tree work, as well as pelvis out of alignment from a previous injury, lots of massage, stretching and strength exercises put it all right! That was two years ago, and all is still fine.

ICE is the athletes best friend, and as arborists, we're all athletes!
Good luck, hope you get it all sorted.
