Looks homemade to me too, but it might just be the color.

I know it is not home made because my friend has one too.

He loaned me his last year and I was amazed how well it worked for its small size. I searched craigs' list and found one in northern kentucky just like his and got it in the middle of winter for 400 bucks.

It has a 5hp briggs & strattone engine. I've split 8 cords so far and still going. Mostly 24-27" diameter red oak. I have to line up the existing drying crack in the log to split the biggy.

It has some old stickers on it but too faded to read.
Suspect they may have been around Ohio. My friend bought his new 30+ years ago and his still works fine and he loans it out to everyone.

Ive seen pics on here before of splitters with that double barrel design but cant remember the details. Ill say its not homemade but it may have been modified over the years.:)

It's a Heathkit I have one that looks a lot like it. Mine is orange and still has the heathkit sticker on it and is basically original. I got it from a friend's dad years ago. It works good but the pump is getting tired, my hydro tank is different and I have horizontal shaft engine other than that is identical.

I think I know who made your splitter, at least in its original form.:)
Was made by an outfit called J&D Hydraulics.
I have one like that, that I bought new in 1986. Mine is a 3pt. model.
Darn thing has split untold cords of wood over the years. It works great too.
I like the double round tube setup, works well with big rounds or flat wood. The back end where wedge is wide open, nothing in the way, and being 3pt mounted, can set it at any height I like. I think I have the original papers for it. Will try find that tomorrow.

Gregg,

Gregg, that is it!!! Is this company still around?
I do not need anything from them, just curious because seems like such a good splitter might want another.

THANKYOU VERY MUCH

pete

Pete, The splitter is called the Little Giant Log Splitter, by JD Hydrolic. (Portage, Ohio).
All the gasoline models used a 5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine. They were 10 Ton models, but did make a version with 2-stage pump, which were 13 ton.

They made a two versions of the wheeled version also. One like yours, used lawn & garden wheels. And one used high way wheels & tires, and had a 1 7/8" ball hitch fastened right under the wedge.

The stroke was different on some models also. 20"-24". They even made a 3 pt. model with the gas engine on it. The one I have is run off the tractor hydraulics. I bought mine from a Ford/New Holland dealer back in fall of 1986.
It has never given me any problems at all.:)

Yours, is the only other one I have seen! I should go out and take some pics of mine, it is on the tractor now. Hope that helps out on the identification a little..

Cool, thanks again. Seems like a real reliable splitter.

Can't beat the durability. Got tired of swinging the maul and hearing the dead thump of "na bubba na".

The information that is shared on this board never ceases to amaze me

Give yourselves a well deserved High Five

I'm curious, does that movable wedge help? I've never seen anything like it and was just wondering if it's beneficial.

That is awesome!!!! I copied the pics.

Yes that moveable wedge acts like a handle to pull it around by and a wedge to split with. Very well built. Starts on second pull if cold and been sitting.

Only 10 ton but works hard and seems real strong.

You guys are the best.

You i.d.'d my splitter and saved my 026 in the same month.

thanks again

pete

I have that splitter too. Mine runs off of tractor hydralics. It was originally a three point unit, but someone down the ownership line put a set of wheels under it. Very reliable machine.
