Am I being unreasonable to be VERY annoyed at one of my employees for asking for loans till friday? Friday is payday OBV. I take it right outa his check so it's not like I dont get it back. Although he still owes me 75 from over the winter which I have been cutting him some slack on paying back. Was waiting for him to have a nice check but his check always looks kinda chity cuz it's always light from the money he has already got. I have told him that I dont like it and he always agrees its not real cool. Then hits me up again the next week. I woke up to a text this morning asking for hlf his days pay today. I ended up doing it. in fact, just gave (loaned) him a 100. What really pissed me off was when I looked in my wallet before levn the house and seeing I only had bout 35 bucks...so now I gotta hit ATM.:msp_mad: like I really freakn wanna take the time time to fool around with that. SO...am i being a jerk or what? Its not like i cant afford to float the money. Thats not the point. I feel like I am an enabler. I really dont know exactly what he does with his money. I know he had to buy cigs for his GF...and gas...and pay some money on his rent... IDK..maybe I need to lighten up. But i gotta say, for someone who..and i quote..."aint been drinkin" and "I been keepin outa trouble" he sure does need to borrow money alot. This kid is a good employee 90% of the time. He is a keeper for the most part. I have been teachn him to climb and he is doing well at it. He kinda reminds me of....me...when I was his age. Maybe thats the part that worries me....:hmm3grin2orange:

you not bein unreasonable. time for a private chat which should only include you doing the talking. deliver him a message to the effect that - "you've had your last pre-pay loan". if you like him and he respects you that should be the end of it. might also tell him to not ask again or you'll put him in a tree with no safety rigging and no ground support and then you'll drive off and leave him for a couple hours. just kidding.

Tough spot

On the one hand it doesn't really cost you anything and is a benifit to your help, on the other hand if you think you're hurting the guy in the long run or just aren't comfortable with the situation you can say no, if you do that he may have to go another route to get the money ie payday loan pawn etc. I've never been there myself but I hear once you start its a rough cycle to break

Well, it does.....cost...

So when you deduct that cash from the business account, what category does it fall under tax wise? Usually transactions at the ATM would count as a cash withdrawal, taxed to the owner...unless you documented it into Petty Cash.....so he does cost you money....
Provided you pay him with W-2, you now deduct that fifty from the gross on the paycheck......but if you left the fifty on the paycheck......there would be taxes, matching, social security, etc. that would allow you more of a tax benefit! So you just show more income, essentially, for yourself, with each "paycheck loan" you give out......

My 2 cents....

Been there, done that for many years.

My solution: post a sign, announcing that all advances on your paycheck will incur a $2.00 charge, or 5%, whichever is greater.

Watch the request for advances come to a quick end.

Sure, if that is all it takes to make their broke asses go away and keeps me from feeling sorry for their broke asses while I got them at asses and elbows then I go for the wallet. If I don't got it then I tell them to beat it cause my ass is broke then they are asses and eblows feeling sorry for me. Don't play games with con artists and people who don't make good somehow.

Firstly, what kind of trademan only has $35 in their wallet?:msp_tongue:

Second, if you go a little above the call to help your guys out, theres a good chance at some stage you will need them to do the same. I guess it matters how many guys youve got and what kind of relationship you have with them.

I wouldnt hesitate to forward them money.

I have no problem loaning a few hundred if and when needed but I'm not an ATM for petty cash. Once or twice fine, after that GTFO.

So I wake up to this text.."will u grab me some more shirts, i can only find 3 of mine , i need more"...:laugh: wtf ever....

Thx for the imput guys. I got this, but wanted to hear other thoughts. He really just has no clue about being responsible. His GF got her food stamp card and he had bags full of little debbies cakes and like 5 sandwiches earlier this month.....now he has nothing. Kinda sad ...as in what a freakn joke.

let's face it; going into labouring for tree work isn't exactly a smart career move... anyone who is forward thinking, responsible, self reliant and motivated is probably going to get themselves into a different career path, or at least be doing their own thing rather than dragging brush for minimum wage. It's the kind of job that attracts (at best) well intentioned guys who are living hand to mouth and make poor lifestyle decisions. You ought to be happy when you've got desperate staff... it means you can probably hang on to them indefinitely!

Having said that, I never have minded paying my staff for work they have done. I don't ever give loans, but I'm happy to pay for work already completed. I generally pay cash at the end of every day for casual labour, and I find it's a very strong motivator for staff to turn up and work well. For some hard to explain reason, staff think money today is worth working much harder for than money at the end of this week. I think it's the same thing that says buying something on credit isn't really as expensive ans paying for it today ;-)

lol i feel broke if i dont have a grand hidden in my wallet to pick up a good deal when it comes along.

lol, i hear ya. I personally never been one for carrying "alot" of cash. I usaully have 100 or so on me. I just dont need it so why carry it. Anything the company needs is almost always from the debit card. CASH?? i dont know anything about any cash...nope, no cash here. Hell, I am flat broke.....

I used to work for a guy who carried a fat wad everywhere he went...prolly 4 grand or better. If he bought a soda at gas station he pulled that whole wad out and flipped hunys till he found somthin small. I always thought it was cheesy. I am not saying thats the same as keepn a 1000 stashed in your wallet, which can be VERY handy for a deal that pops up!

I started a strict employee policy six years ago no more loans against paychecks. In fact, no loans. I have former employees that still owe me money from over 20 years ago.

might be a reflection on the difference of the price of things in the US vs Aus, but I find you need to carry about $1500 with you. I have it on me or in my truck but don;t flash it or let people know about it. It's a good get out of jail free card and will cover a replacement saw for that broken one, fix the flat tyre, pay the fine, the registration, get the engine going again or pay a repair on just about anything. On the odd occasion it's also snapped me up a couple of bargains ;-) You've got to have a bit of folding stuff to grease the wheels!

Can ya spot me 50?

maybe....

I'd find something extra that he can do for it. It seems that he's in need of a little extra period.

Not saying you're not paying him enough, but if he's putting in a full week and needs extra, then I'd find something extra to do. Clean/service equipment, shop time, improving the grounds at home base, something.

If he's not up for earning a little extra, then the fronting would likely end shortly.

I don't have a problem with advances if they bust their ass for me.
True ,they are beeing irresponsible and hurting themselves in the long runbut,it's not my job to fix their private lives.

Hmmmmm Just take a extra 50.00 from his check and tell him now you will already have his advance ready.
