HOLY CRAP BATMAN, Did they kiss you first.
I thought my OEM kits at $6-$9 was high and aftermarkets go for $2-$3.
I bet with paying $38 for a carb kit you got the highest quality out there by some folks opinion. NOT.

holy crap batman?????????

no doubt he got ripped off thats about what i charge to buy the kit and install it.advice dont buy from the stihl shops they always add 30 to 40 percent to other dealers price.the local stihl shop here wont touch anything that he doesnt sell off his lot and two years ago i bought a 14 inch bar and he charged me 35.00 for the damn thing. by the way where did you come up with that to much tv land for you.now brush your teeth and go to bed you have work in the morning.:chainsawguy:

That Stihl kit is $32 out here, but nobody buys them... Stihl also sells the "vendor kit" for much much less...

Did you ask your dealer for that particular kit?

No, I just asked for a carb rebuild kit. Would you have a part # for this "vendor kit"? Some of my stuff is on B.O., so maybe I will see if I can exchange it when I go back.

Good heavens! Do a "google" for MFG supply, also in Wis. For less than 10 bucks they will be more than happy to supply you with a carb rebuild kit.

Lake, goes to show that most dealers are looking after thier own interests first, then the customer. Dealers in my place just act like that.
gotta love the internet sales :) .

Not so sure.... dealers that buy either kits from Stihl make a profit, but the cost from Stihl is still high.. Many dealers don't even know about the "vendor" kits" from Stihl. Over-the-counter sales of parts is a very very low volume (and often a pita) business for most dealers.

We are a decent sized service shop and we don't buy any carb kits from Stihl. We do have to buy some of the odd ball carb parts NOT found in the OEM kits though. Our wholesale cost is $4-6 for the carb OEM (walbro, zama, tillotson) kits, and less for the generic aftermarket kits. We don't buy the after-market kits. We resell them in service or over-the-counter (very few) they are $12.50 each. Decent profit - sure, but...

If you buy one kit from say Mfgsupply or Baileys, and add in the shipping charges, you're over $10, maybe more. If you buy other items at the same time, the freight is less significant.

I bought a carb kit for my 046 - part # 1128-007-1066. It cost $38, I thought I read they were like $8-10. Did I get the wrong kit? Thanks

Lesson #1 - always ask the price of the item before you commit to purchasing it. Anything over $10-$12 max for a complete rebuild kit, not just the diaphragm and gasket kit, should raise your eyebrows.

The Stihl dealer I work with was enraged when I told him I could get his $26 carb kit for $6 elsewhere in a Tillotson baggie instead of a Stihl baggie. He wasn't mad at me, he was mad at Stihl NW. He now buys in bulk from a place listed in the above post, and treats me great. He is the exception, not the rule!

One of our local dealers doesn't sell carb kits - they sell the individual parts... which they buy from Stihl (stupid prices), and even when they service the saws. Sad, but true.

Ouch. Did they throw in the assembly lube?

I have had better luck with the aftermarket kits lately than the carb manufacturer supplied kits on average.

I'll ask all other techs to relay any horror stories of aftermarket carb kits.

I did see some questionable chinese made kits a few years back but I have not personally seen any lately and stick with known suppliers.

Thanks for your detailed reply. Seems that your shop has worked towards a solution that satisfies both your interest and the customer. Cool.

My point was that many dealers do not go that road and simply charge the full stihl price. Does not satisfy my needs, and probaly many other.;)

But if you ask JM 'ed he will tell you that by paying $38 for that carb kit through the stihl dealer. You paid for the best quality and research known to man for that carb kit, BS IMHO. ;) :D .
I think I will stick to the OEM $6-$9 complete kits and maybe someday try the cheaper aftermarket kits too.

I was recently sent a batch of aftermarket kits even when I'd ordered OEM (hey, there's no difference, and we wouldn't notice..). They had parts missing, parts doubled up , and several had no disk on the metering diaphragm.. At first it was funny, then not... sent them back. Can't remember the manf, but it was "American" something...

Apart from the occassional missing or doubled up parts, I've never had a problem with OEM (carb manf.) kits.
