here's a pic of the tree i'm going to see later. this is just one from the net i got. i'll take some more pics when i get there. i've been there before but didnt have cam with me. i think its the largest diameter live oak in the state and i think it used to have the largest crown spread too, but some limbs are missing now. whoever trimmed it last did an absolutely attrocious job. like they never heard of an undercut or anything. there's a few 36" limbs missing that were peel-cut, ripping large pieces from the trunk. i'll post the pics later.

as, you are right, those are some ugly scars.

I worked on the maltby oak at the courthouse in Palatka last week. Some guy said that he would cut it down for free, to end the problem of dead branches. So now the county will not pay anything for maintenance.

What are you looking to do with it--is Alachua willing to pay for its care?

160' crown spread? that's not too accurate; doubt it ever was--I got doubts about the 85' height too. I'll be back down there in late June--wanna climb it together and drop a tape measure?

i would say its easily 160' crown spread. i dont think it was ever the tallest, probably less than 85'. pretty sure it holds the diameter record tho. i'm not looking to do anything with it, though it would be nice to climb. only tree i've met that i'd refuse to spike, since i'm a 'hack' you know :). hit me up when ur in town and we can climb it together if you like. i think alachua county or city of lacrosse 'cares' for it, dont know if its ok to climb or not, noone's ever there for the most part tho.

He didnt say he want going to spike it. Maybe he will go with this method
