Crofter,
I don't feel any effect will prevail until I've done some testing. I had a theory, which hopefully, will be proven wrong as that would explain some of the veer I experienced. There might be a combination in bad rails and chain. So testing from a more scientific view than from a mathematical will possibly render a more true result; If you generate a fault, the outcome is a result of the fault. Right?

It would be important to know for sure that there was only one fault so as to not attribute the result to something else. It is rare to find a chain with no other problems than unequal raker length from one side to the other to be able to test this. I have a neighbour who does weird things to his chain because he files different angles on each side. It cuts crooked and he tries to compensate by sharpening more on one side and fooling with raker length. He tries seven different remedies at the same time. Eventually He tires of it not cutting and I straighten it out and true the bar and he is good to go for a while.

Yes, I know what you mean, impressed though that he at least try to make it right - over here it's normal procedure to use a chain 'til its dull - then buy a new one. No wonder they never learn how to sharpen it. Further more, I think a filed chain is sharper than a machine-ground.

Mike, I kow most of the shops around me Dont have a bar rail dresser, but they will always sell you a new bar! I have only found one guy who actually has one, and he keeps it in his garage and not even in the shop. Did you buy one from an old shop or do they still make them? Would be nice to have for that odd bar check up. I just started a thread with a file for sale before I saw this.

I have used a table mounted belt sander and it seemed to do teh trick alright. Don't think I would do it too many times though. Will have to go check out that roller someone mentioned. I think it would be better to roll them straight before grinding down any high spots.
