Chain Sharpening for the 1000th Time

Today I did a good bit of cutting, and alot of filing.

I can put a factory edge back on the chains now!!! I had to sharpen the 36" bar 3 times(114 cutters!!), and I can put the factory edge back on the chain.

Holding the handle at a slight downward angle makes a huge difference. On the factory edge, you can see the tapered edge, and the only way to get that back on is to hold the file at a downward angle. Also it brings the corner out, and makes it much sharper.

I still need some more practice, but today it clicked, and I was taken rocked out chains, and makin them new again. I just need to get a raker depth gage that will work on saftey chain, as the bumper links throw it off.

The groudies love it too, as I cut the stuff up alot smaller. It seems that I cut the stuff to my size, and not to theirs.

It was fun today, being able to cut with a sharp edge all day.

I have been wanting to get a larger chainsaw, but I didnt want to get it, and still not be able to sharpen a chain to be able to use the extra power. I am thinking either an 066, or an 088. The diff in the price is only around 2-300 dollars, and having an 088 would just be cool!!

Enough babaling for now. Thanks for yalls help.

I find that the 066's run best with no muffler at all, especialy when coupled with a 32" bar and rocked out 404. chipper chain.
Gets alot of timber down that way.

That's great.

Like I said before, get an Oregon drop-center depth gauge (gauge).  You can find them at your local ACE hardware or just about anywhere.  I can't hardly remember the last time I didn't see a 0.025 gauge with file for like 5 bucks among the files and such on display at just about every hardware and farm/home store I've been in over the last year.

That gauge will let you drop both the chain depth guide and the safety bumper.

We got low's the might have it.

As to the saftey bumper, I aint gonna get that style chain anymore, but I am gonna use what I got and just not buy any more.

To me it is still a toss up. An 066 is practical, and an 088 is awsome, but heavy. So i will have to decide, I always love excess, and I am starting to get more large removals.

The excess of the 088 goes a little beyond initial cost.  Although you might never want to share bars between your largest saw and some of the others, with it you'll be losing that option.  The 066 (MS660) at least shares the mid-sized mounting pattern (and clutch cover) with the rest of the current pro saws; save maybe the MS361 on the cover.  The 066 with 25" bar makes a great combination for a lot of uses.

What are you running the 36" bar on now?

660vrs088

The 660 cycles a lot faster (13.5 I think) than the 088. Even tho the 088 has a hellva lot of pulling power especially in the stump cut, the 660 seems to me to be a much more versatile saw. I use the 660 much more and like glen just said you can use all the bars and chain for it that you already have.
Get it set up with Stihls dual port muffler and a maxiflow air intake.
Question to you saw experts:
should the new saw be "seated" say 10 or so tanks of fuel burned, BEFORE putting on a dual port muffler?
thanks

The one thing I see alot of people doing as they sharpen chains, is they lose the half moon effect. If you look at a new chain from the side, from the cutter part of the tooth down, you will see a half moon shape. This gives the chip some curl. Lots of guys lose this half moon shape as they sharpen. Or guys will do opposite and push downward on the file, missing the cutting edge of the tooth completely.

I managed to hit dirt 2 times, and the last time i sharpened it was to put it back up. Like I said, I did alot of cutting today, at least for me. Now that I have found out how to keep it sharp, nothing else will do:).

I am using the 36" on the 044, and I have considered that the bars wouldnt be interchangable. Does the 066 use 3/8 or .404 or either/or? I have 20", 28" and 36" for the 044.

As to the muffler mod, opening up/unrestricting the muffler makes the saw run cooler, so I do it as soon as I get home with the saw. Friction is increased during the breakin period, so there is no need to retain the extra heat by having a stock muffler.

Cool, but the 'larger saw' has nothing to do with it.

An 044 takes a 20", 24" tops.

:)

A quick flip through bailey's shows that an 044's mount will take up to a 50" bar. However the 044 doesnt have enough power to pull a 50" bar. A "larger saw" with the same mount (066) would have enough to pull the 36" or 50", if you really wanted to.

When I get my "larger saw" I will still use the 36" for chopping brush on the trailer, and the 20 and 28 for bucking and other regular cutting needs.

A 36" bar is too big to make a bunch of huge cuts, but for cutting trees down and making a cut every 16'6", it does fine. I need to get some timed cuts with my 044 in 3' hardwood.

Just don't hand it to me.

Haha yeah it would. Kinda like that edited pic of you, with the 200 and a 50" or so bar.

I guess I will get a 066 for now. I am sending an email to a guy from AS that had one held for me, but I might have waited too long.

Rich, besides the muffler (which I can fix:D) what else is bad about the new ones? Do they still have the intelii carb?

For the MILLIONTH time! Intelli carb DOES NOT MEAN FIXED JET. There is such a thing as a fully adjutable intellicarb. HUsky uses a "compensating" (intelli) carb on some of their saws. Intelli carb is not the enemy, fixed jets are!
