I am trying to source some good chainsaw chaps that will fit over thick winter pants...we run winter camps that require us to cut firewood at -40°. The chaps we have are just too tight to fit over a warm set of winter bibs. Does anybody know of a good pair of chaps that will work in the cold and have the adjustablility to accomodate warm clothes?

In extreme cold I wear Saw pants under bibs, these usually have far better flexibility than chaps and are more comfortable. Otherwise there are a few manufacturers that make oversized chaps for people with 40” plus inseams. I can’t think of the brand we have at work for the large workers right now though.

That idea was suggested and would likely work if it was a couple of people cutting for an extended period. There are 2 issues with wearing saw pants underneath instead of chaps. 1) While it might save the leg, it won't save the pants and that can be nearly as life threatening when hundreds of kilometers in the bush in the dead of winter. 2) We have up to 20 people in camp and any of them may have to cut firewood...it is hard to get undressed in the cold and put on chainsaw pants....

What about chainsaw pants outside everything else instead of as an inside layer? I don't spend much time outside at -40, but some time at -20. I'd guess you could find some real large chainsaw pants that would fit over whatever you'd need them to. Maybe you'd have to shed your other outer layer and replace it with the saw pants though.

Are the camps inaccessible in fairer weather?

How does a saw even oil when it is that cold ? I have simply had my buddy sew extensions on my straps, 8-10 inches extra works well for me.

Finding pants that would fit over very large ski-doo boots would be a challenge (Size 13 Cabela's Trans Alaskans are massive). The camps are accessible by ski-plane only....weather has to be good and you have to have daylight....it is safe to plan on 24+ hour response time for evacuation if an incident were to occur. Chainsaws will oil at -40° but you have to use winter oil that has been thinned with at least 25% kerosene...

I am thinking that buckle up chaps are the way to go and then you can extend the straps as required. We only have zipper chaps now and I can barely walk with them on, let alone be productive and safe.

The standard $50 "cheapie" chaps fit over my Carharts bibs just fine, I just have to put out the straps a bit more. I don't normally bother with chaps though, but I don't do a whole lot of hand cutting.

Generally doesn't get much colder than -30* here though, maybe not wearing as much. Usually long jons, jeans and bibs for the bottom, t shirt, 1 or 2 hoodie shirts and a coat for the top.

I have Labonville W850KP wrap chaps and I love them. I highly suggest these chaps and if they will custom make a size for your needs then it's a win-win!
