uncle has this, offered it to me and it's so old the ID plate on top is just bare aluminum. It's got a 36 in bar (not shown) and there's a contraption that you latch onto the bar that lets you cut boards out of downed trees. It starts and runs but dies after about 15-20 seconds
and the on off switch will light you UP if you try to kill it with it. Made in West Germany. Any help appreciated......... IMG_8469.JPGIMG_8466(1).JPGIMG_8468.JPGIMG_8467.JPG

From just looking at the saw, what is the difference from a 056 to a 045 ?
Well I did a very quick cursory view of the pictures and it looks like the 056 variant. It is possible that it is a 045 but I do believe you will find Stihl sold a lot more 056 than 045 saws. With that being said simple math says the betting odds favor 056 over 045. If I can remember I will go get a few to look at

My guess was as @Bill G says above, plus the muffler and the remains of the top cover ID tag look big enough to hold extra information like "electronic" or "Super" or "Magnum", lots of 045's had the model cast into the top cover.
Once you start pulling them apart and checking ignitions and bore diameter- it becomes easier to confirm which is which.

That's a wonderful old saw. I think maybe 045 but I am not as sharp as most of these guys. You are fortunate to be offered it. Hope you enjoy it to the fullest. If you should decide to let it go, please put me in line behind the other guy and let me know.

I pulled out a few 056 and 045 saws today but did not get much time to more than just that, get them out. I only found a couple 045's and they were aluminum tagged
