A tip for plastic peanuts: Fill plastic grocery bags about 1/4 full and tie. Pack the bags around the (wrapped) saw tightly. This will keep the peanuts and the saw from shifting in the box, and your recipient will be grateful for not having to deal with loose peanuts and fragments that cling to everything around.
 
I once received an item, where the seller placed it in a plastic bag, and tried to fill the rest of the box with foam-in-a-can insulation / sealant.

As I recall, it did not work as well as he expected, but was OK.

I think that the trick would be finding the right kind of foam. Something that expanded to fill large volumes (some of the window seal stuff won’t), but won’t expand and blow the cardboard box apart.

I bought 3 low water use toilets online. Had free shipping even though I live in the middle of nowhere.
They told me to check the box’s before I signed for them
They were packed in heavy duty cardboard boxes and spray foam.
They could have been dropped from the truck with no issues
