John,
Check out this site for lots of great videos and stuff. Mark Nye is from up dere in Canada, too. He's a great guy and a hell of a machinist. I really like motors in general, but turbines are the balls. Mark does this for a hobby.

Plenty of buzz words there.

Doug,

That website is way to cool. I think i know what field I want to specialize in after i finish my Bachelors, Turbines simply rock and i have loved engines all my life. If my chainsaw sounded like that boat engine he has i think i would just about cry every time i fried it up. Hey there is a project ROTAX ROB has a v-8 powered chainsaw why not build a small turbine powered chainsaw. Talk about waayyyyyyyy to much RPM. Going to need one massive planetary reducer.

Confused,

????, it's a shame that I know so much more about other things than chainsaws! Of course zero times anything equals zero..lol. A few years ago, I did some electronic engine management stuff for a good buddy of mine on his 40' twin turbine powered Skater (tunnel hulled boat). Even though I spent literally months around those turbines, they still never cease to amaze me as to their power to weight ratio. Each was in the neighborhood of 1500 HP and weighed less than 400 lbs. Of course the 6:1 planetary reduction drives each weighed in at a healthy 250. Still the whole package weighed less than a standard iron V8. We put a small one in another buddy's Yamaha Wave Runner PWC. With a dinky little 240 HP Allison 250 turbine in that, we eventually saw a jet pump cavitation-limited 80 MPH. Gotta love this manly s%$t!:p

Hello doug,
I think you are exibiting signs of a serious illness, something similar to gypo john's problem with chain saws and racing chain. the only known cure is to buy more saws and have dennis or myself modify them. only cure known to work

I hear ya, Ken! I've been ill since long before I can remember. The list of symptoms is as long as my arm and seems to get longer by the year. Way too many hobbies and not nearly enough time. My problem is that when I get interested in something, I always jump in up to my neck and sometimes over my head. Trust me when I say that my love of saws is only the tippity top of the iceberg. I guess you could say that I'm like a chainsaw in a way: either off or wide open.

Ok, this might sound like B.S. but I have heard of a guy who did try and build a turbin powered chainsaw, I believe the powerplant was out of a small helicopter. The project ended upon him burning down his shop upon firing the turbine for testing.
