"He awoke one morning to find that the city had ordered the 30 foot tall trees hacked down to about 6 feet, while randomly selected shrubs were cut to the stump. The fully developed trees had been shielding motorists view of the ugly flood control channel and it’s rusty chain link fence for years."

Ouch:

The title could also read " city clears wires so citizens have power and cable TV"... " and it didn't cost the taxpayers but they still complain"

You lost me. The city ordered tree work and it didn't cost the taxpayers?
Was the work performed by jail trustees with donated equipment and fuel?
(actually, that's exactly what it looks like)

Another feather in the cap for the Arbor Day clowns. I should start the Christmas Day Foundation and threaten to sue for trademark violations every time somebody uses the word "Christmas".

Maybe the city is preparing to host a chain saw carving competition on that street. It's the only reason I can think of for leaving 6' stumps.

Ok, maybe so, you're right but its not like they made the people come directly out of pocket for it... which in someplaces they do.
I too get iritated when I walk through the park and see the work done by the township roadcrew. I do think" Hey! That's my money!" I keep thinking I should volunteer to help prune some of the trees within the township parks but I am not sure how well it would go over.

That's the classic example of two things:

Letting the trees get too big for too long...so the buggers that have to cut them are limited with their choices of pruning.

Needing them to be cut, send in a crew who either don't know or don't care about pruning principles, who think the only option is to cut everything below the utilities.

I reckon, if that is the only option, then cut them down completely

There should be no fast tall growers within 15 to 20 foot of dripline. That way trimming is minimal
trees appear undisturbed and all are happy. Saucer Magnolia and crape myrtles, dog wood and others should fill the spaces nearer the lines. Can't put the blame on line clearance for improper planting and planning.

No but to tell the truth I had to do a repair job on a Saucer Magnolia that the line guys about hacked to death last month. 3 ripped branch collars and they stubbed every limb they cut. The HO was furious.

You can't tell from the photo, but those phone lines are 40 feet from those trees.

Folks, the utility lines are along the back fence of the houses, across the flood control channel. Take a look at the other pictures in the story that was linked.

Those trees were nowhere near anything that justified even snipping a leaf, let alone hacking them like that!

Too big... for what? They're on a dirt strip between a flood control channel and a major street. They weren't bothering anything!

Read again, Bermie. These trees are 40' from the utilities. The photo angle doesn't show it accurately.

Well, considering what they pay their city officials and civil servants in CA, I'm thinking about heading that way and looking for a city job myself...

Can't beat the retirement either...

Thats right.... life is one big scam anymore.

Either your benefiting from it or your paying for it:chainsaw:

He should have been and just might have a court case. I never Did much to Ornamental s for power pruned nothing larger than a quarter and proper no stubs. I may have stubbed some country pines and hackbury's for swift production but not ornamental trees.

Yeah, Mike, but this is bad even by SoCal standards! :dizzy:

have you seen what they do to Fruitless Mullberries in the Inland Empire? Every few years, they hack them back to stumps, then let them grow for a while.

Some people have them hacked every fall so they don't have to rake leaves! :dizzy:

Maybe they left those stumps there so they can hang a banner of beautiful trees blocking the view of the rusty fence , instead of some garbage weed tree that is nothing more than mother nature reclaiming unmaintained ground ....
