Can someone please tell me how to foot lock, without anything but a climbing line and a Blake's hitch? An old man " to old to climb anymore " told me it can be done with out all this new fancy ****. Thanks

Search "tree climbing foot lock" and check out the secured foot lock vids. You might also look at some vids of knot tying, blake's hitch would br a good start.
Hasty harness is something a lot of folks used to start climbing, also.

I have a harness and I know the Blake's hitch, I just want to be able to get in the tree with my climbing line without spikes and without being right up on the trunk. So I don't hurt the tree and I'm not tired by the time I get to where am working. Right now I don't have the money to by all the things I see guys using on YouTube to ascend. Thanks

When I was a little younger and a little lighter, hip thrusting was the way to get into a tree without getting to tired. Now days foot locking seems much better, for me! When the ratio of muscle to mass gets like mine, hip thrusting just doesn't cut it for a long climb.

On Ddrt? Use a single loop foot lock.
Git up 16' so that you have some line weight below ya, take a loop of climb line with the running end underneath and against your instep. Point your toe up, take a bite of line, then stand down on the loop. Practice will git ya moving pretty quick.
Theres a vid on youtube that demonstrates it.
Handy for short "forgot something in the attic" accents.
Old man was probably talking mid air hip thrust. Try the single loop and then tell him mid air accent aint no sweat.
Secured foot lock, much faster for full ascent. You'll need some good prusic cord.
Careful. Know yer limits... I don't.

I have done it before i had all this new gear. I have even backed up a short abseil on a single line with just advancing a prusik loop and a lot of footlocking. Tiring compared to using new shiny gear, but it can be done.
