could dirt bike boots work in place of L pads

It would work on the upper part and protect your shins from being sore. The problem would come from the cradle part around the bottom of the boot, it would likely twist out from under your boot as most motocross boots don't have much of a heel on them. They have a low almost smooth heel to keep from snagging/digging into the dirt when your put your foot out in a corner. Enduro boots on the other hand have tread and a heel on them which might work. You would have to look at each brand to check and see.
Lineman's boots have almost extended heels to keep the spike cradle from turning out from under the boot.

Slice a channel for the spur. I love my big fuzzy kamik winter lined ( and also has a removable liner) boots. You can tighten up the straps on the climbers REAL good. They don't move but your feet still can. I wear em even in the summer ( sometimes) if I know I will be up all day. I was surprised it was not necessary to have a big heal to hold the spur in place in you could get the straps locked down tight enough. It would cut your foot off with Reddy's and the like its so tight. As you know those winter boots do not really have a heal at all and I climb like a panther... a slow fat lazy pather but a panther to be sure.
But this is a good concept so far, better than real hot stinky feet. I haven't ever really looked at a bike boot before ( got pics?) and was think more along snow board boot BUT YOU CAN"T WALK IN EITHER. At least not good enough to dodge bullets.
Used to be if you hired me as a sub I would show up in sandals. Things have changed, now you can't hire me. ah hah!
I honestly don't like to many boots out there, just nothing with my name on it yet. I don't do cataloge boot orders so maybe I haven't tried everything.
I saw some climbers that had a big Herman Munster boot heal built in. They were constructed with this high density plastic. I tried to get a pair to try but haven't had the luck.
I have been trying to locate a pair of these Wolverine hunting boots. Some other good hunting boots are good too but some are really not going to like getting chewed cause they are for Eddie Baur and Mr. Bean.
where is that boot pic?

save yourself the time and money and go get them gekos2. scarpa makes a great shoe made fer heavy hiking and have a nice big nylon arch support so you can still be comfy with a 100lb ruck sack on your back. they work better than logger boots in the spurs. they are gore-tex lined and wraped in kevlar in all the right spots. retail is bout $150.00:clap:

Boots for climbing

As a logger of 30 years, timber cutter, tree climber, topper and arborist when asked, the only boot for me, is hand made by Whites of Spokane Wa.. Lace to toe calk. I have them made at a height of 18" as I am over 6' and I want my climbing gear wrapped around my boots and not resting on the top of a standard 16" that cause's the boot to push down on your ankle. I spend a great deal of my time climbing and I have never been disappointed with Whites.

sounds good, send me a pair. Size 9 W.

Motocross boots are a fairly solid bet.
Any style of dirtbike boot is meant to have weight transmitted via the footpeg in the same place spurs rest. They are tall enough, armored in a way.

Snowboard boots have a forward lean built in for boarding so they would be uncomfortable to climb in IMO.

Just like loggers boots you can buy anywhere from some cheap flimsy motocross boots up to the top of the line $450 boots. Why wouldn't you just buy loggers boots?
I think the moto boots with high shin guards would get in the way of climbing.

how so?
your spurs are going to rest on the shinguards.

The hard plastic soles arent going to make limbwalking easy, or any sort of climbing, but the spurs would be comfy.

Spiking straight up and down the trunk shouldn't be a problem at all but moving around and positioning when you're not on the spikes seems like it would be hard? Personally I'd rather wear my $30 Modells workboots than my moto boots.

has anyone tryed attaching climbers to a pair of motor cross boots

i have 2 guys at work, who went out a got (of all things) football arm pads... they slip them over their foot, onto the calf, put boots back on, strap on spikes...they say that they work wonders... i don't use mine enough to buy a set.. and when i do wear them, it reminds me why i fly a bucket for a living....
