I thought this theead was a sticky at the top of the milling page... it seems to have lost it's stickiness...
Yeah, I wondered about that. The most important thread in the milling forum and yet somehow it's not a sticky. Has resulted in new folks asking a lot of questions answered here because they've never seen this thread.

All good points gentlemen.

Doh - how could I forget the wedges!!!

Dust mask is good too. I have a full filtered air mask - helmet - muffs combo that is very useful for dry logs but mostly where I mill where there is almost always some breeze which helps enormously.
@BobL

Can I see this helmet, mask, respirator, muff combo? Or a link to something that has it all in one package? I have not found one

Thank you sir

Assume he means putting on a respirator, and then putting a logger's muffs/helmet combo on over it, but maybe he really does have a custom all in one, it's BobL after all, inventor of all cool things. I tend to not bother with top-of-head protection and just go with the muffs, face visor, and respirator when I'm remembering to protect myself and it's not too hot.

Yah I agree. I dont NEED a helmet for milling. Iv been looking for a long time for something that has good ear pro, face shield and respirator all on one…..that is not $600

You would not BELIEVE the amount of times I take ear pro and respirator on and off after EACH SALB because the customer just wants to chat as soon as my saw is off. It gets old.

So a good system that is easy on and off would be cool.

This is the battery powered respirator.
As far as I know it was made by a company called TRITON for the British/Australian/NZ market and is no longer available.
The respirator filter uses two standard P2 cartridges.
It's a bit clunky and underpowered compared to more recent respirators but given it includes a helmet/filter/face shield and muffs it has some uses.
The Muffs are so-so (only 25db reduction) so had to use additional ear plugs when milling.
I also found it was underpowered in terms of air delivery so I replaced the dry cell batteries with a higher V Li-ion battery pack but this still did not provide enough air in hot weather to remove sweat generated when milling.
Have used it only a few times when milling on super dry logs in confined spaces.
However it does have many other uses including to destroy wasp nests and cleaning up very dusty environments like my deceased Father in law's shop which was ankle deep in sawdust.
In my shop I have very good fully plumbed dust extraction with a 4HP extractor located outside my shop

Thank you sir. That is like a welder helmet with the air supply. Bummer about the earmuffs only doing 25. I currently use earplugs because they are so good at noise reduction. But taking them in and out they get very dirty and so do my ears.

Pretty sure I’m going to end up spending the money on a really nice pair of earmuffs and just use my old welder respirator for now. Its clunky too. And hot. And it’s no fun because I have to keep my beard trimmed really short.. but it is what it is.

Funny joke about that type of respirator that has the air pump on the back of your belt line. Guys in my first welding shop thought it was funny to go up behind you while you’re welding and fart into your air intake….. lol. Gross but we were as 18 year old bucks
