Every once in a while I think about another need for another saw  . A while back I had inquired about 30cc class saws and came to the conclusion that I would get a Stihl 170/017 or 180/018 when money allowed. That money has not showed itself yet :( . Since I have a Shindaiwa trimmer, I thought I'd see what they offer in there 30cc class saws, for variety sake. I know there are a few Shindiawa fans here. Anybody ran the 285s (28.5cc) (or formerly 300s - I think)? Has anybody ran the 285s and the Stihl 170/017, 180/018 for comparison reason's?

I haven't ran the 285, but any saw with only one bar stud doesn't do it for me. A saw that size is truly a homeowner / occasional use saw. If you want a helluva small saw, get a 377. This is a top-notch machine, makes good power, and is light and nimble. These of course are my opinions, but I really think you will be happy with the 377.

I have and run 2 Shindaiwa 360's.............both have one bar stud...........moot IMO!!! The 300/360/377 share the same platform all good saws. The current version of the 360 is the 352!!!

These saws get ran and ran hard.............no problems with the bar stud!!!

The Stihl MS200T has one bar stud also..........never heard of any problems there either!!!

I guess it all comes down to how long of a bar you run. One bar stud is a direct result of lower cost, lighter weight production. Just like girls, beers and saws, two is always better than just one! :hmm3grin2orange:

Didn't realize that it had only one bar stud, I've never handled or seen one in real life. I'd only use a 14" bar on it (or any 30cc class saw). I'd have to look it (285s) over real good if I ever did go that route. It would be a clearing shooting lanes, minor trimming, lumber cutting, 4 wheeler type saw.

As does the MS200 (rear handle).

Where is the chain tensioner access on the 285s/300s?

I've got a 360. When I purchased it I didn't think it'd see much use but it is such an easy saw to run that I find myself grabbing it first for anything it can handle. The one bar stud hasn't been a problem so far, but I find myself giving her some extra tightening when I put her back together. I've been looking at getting a 377 for that reason. Just seems to me it would be an extra margin of security to have two bar studs on a saw.

The 377 is a spendy little bugger - Dealer cost is $305, MSRP of $400. Sounds expensive when you can get a Dolmar 5100S for the same money. But, compare it to the MS200 rear handle and all of a sudden, it is a good buy! Guarantee it would run right alongside that Stihl.

Would you (or anybody else) know the price for a 285s ?

Just to clarify, the Shindaiwa 285s does NOT have just one bar stud. It has two.

EDIT: Kevin, the regular retail price is $284.99.

Thanks for that! How many bar studs for the 300s? You own a 285s?

The 300s has only one bar stud, but is no longer made (at least not available in the US). The 377, which has 2 bar studs, was also discontinued.
No, I don't personally own one but I have one here right now.

Again, thanks for the info. One more question, the price you quoted me, is that with bar and chain? If so, what size bar? Sorry for all the questions...these should be the last ones...:). Just doin' a little research for the future.

No problem. Glad I can help:)
That price includes a 14" (max recommended size) Oregon bar & chain.

Thanks. My guess is that you work in a Shindaiwa shop...:). I got a T260 trimmer that is giving me grief lately. Here's a link to the thread I started a while back: http://www.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=32495&highlight=t260+trimmer
I can't remember how many times I've took the carb apart since then...I think twice including just the other day after taking it out of storage and refilling it with fresh fuel...and I'll be trying it later today. Hope this isn't to far off topic...:).
