Oh for craps sake, let's just give the OP some advice on cutting a tree that is less than a perfect specimen. He NEVER mentioned a sloping back cut ever. And put your ******* wedges away...all of of you, it was a rotten leaner

I wish I had seen it for myself B4 the cutting started, for a good look see... I wonder if a shallow(er) notch may have allowed that wedge of wood to fall out like normal, creating a working hinge.
