Iv heard of the pantyhose over the filter. Any other ideas? My saw is a 3120. I use the oiled foam filters now.

I can get maybe 4-5boards cut on a 30” + diameter tree before the filter needs changed out. Saw will noticeably run differently if I dont.

My next plan. Take 2 foam filters, 1 in the saw and 1 spare. 1 bucket with a lid that has slightly soapy water in it. Run the saw until it needs a new filter. Take it out. Slosh it around in the bucket to clean it up real fast. Run the water out of it. Set it on my truck roof in the sun and dry it while running the other filter.

Seriously tho.

I need like 3-4 filters it seems

If it's an Echo, they are noted for leaking fines past the air filter and require a suitable sized 'O' ring on the stud the air filter fits on and Red beard sells oiled foam air filters to fit if you want to go that route. I have one on my Timber bear btw. You never said what brand or model of saw so I'm shooting in the dark.

3120 is a Husky.

I'm pretty certain those Saws don't have the centrifugal air cleaning doohicky system that the smaller Saws do.
Milling is hard on saws in this dept as you get way more fines than if using a standard chain. I'm not aware of many options other than cleaning the filter frequently, or swapping as you mentioned.

I see lots of these air filter woes threads in here and can’t help but wonder if anyone has ever made a “snorkel” of sorts to be able to attach a chunk of pipe and a much larger filter. I know there are hot saw guys that do similar things but they’re after added air flow more than filtering capacity. I’m thinking of something similar to this …..

Fines are not getting past the foam filter. They’re just filling the filter very fast doesn’t matter which filter type. the fines just fill the filter up super fast. Trying to figure out how to make them last longer between changes..

Appreciate the responses guys.

Maybe an old sock over the filter and change out the sock🤣

Yah they dont have the fancy air deal as you say. Ill just need to stock up on filters most likely.

I’ve often thought of creating some kind of shroud that covers the bottom portion of the flywheel intake. so the flywheel pulls air from the very top of the saw instead of close to the bottom where all the sawdust is being thrown. Probably won’t help much though.

Like a hood scoop kinda that faces the top of the saw.

Been my observation that a dull chain produces way more fines than a sharp one, plus it robs cutting power. red Beard sells snorkel kits for many saws, FYI.
Milling always makes fines. Even super sharp chains.yes the more dull the more fines. But a freshly sharpened chain will still make a massive pile of fine saw dust
