Decided to test chain types and angles today

Nice job. That's about all a 372 is going to want to do, although it did quite well for itself. I'm impressed, with the saw, the log, and the clip.

Well, I got a little bored today and decided to go do some informal testing of different chains and angles on my 372xp running a 32" bar in some really dense red oak. Enjoy:
...

Very neat production, but a 32" on a 372xp is just too much, imo.....:hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

I agree 32" is the upper end for this saw, but I hoped it would magnify the chain differences for the test. I run a 24" bar most of the time but will occasionally pull the 32" out for big stumps or big wood. Most trees I cut around here are under 20" in diameter anyway.

Interestingly enough the 32" bar with skip chain doesn't stress the motor much more than the 24" bar with full comp chain. The extra length is significantly harder on the mount given the added leverage though. Obviously the 32" can also get a little uglier if you get the bar in a bind.

I thought about getting a 7900 for the 32" bar, but it really wouldn't resolve the stress issue on the mounts. In the meantime, I'll just let the 372 take a few extra seconds on the rare instances where I need such a bar. Although another saw might not be a bad idea....

I wouldn't attempt to fall a big hardwood(bigger than the 32 inch bar) with a 372/32 inch bar just to keep the risk down of splitting the tree. But I can tell you first hand that a 372 loves a 28 inch bar

Whats wrong with felling tree bigger than bar lenght?

Nothing at all,I use a 28 inch bar to fall stuff up to five and a half feet, but this is either on an 088 Stihl or 395 Husky. What I meant was I wouldn't use that particular saw with a 32 inch bar to fall anything larger than the bat itself. That 32 inch bar is pushing the 372 to the max

Good job all around. If your 372xp will pull a 32'' bar like that ,I cant wait to see what my 395xp will pull!Once again ,great video.:biggrinbounce2:

Great vid and great production.

To be honest though, since I cut a lot of wood that big and bigger for exented periods of times, I was kind of squirming watching cuts that took over 40 seconds. Made me want to jump in with my larger saw and fresh ground square that would have blasted through in I am guessing around 15 seconds or less with less wear and tear on the operator..

No offense to the 372 as that is a fine saw (I have a 371), but without a wicked sharp chain and pulling that 32 inch bar in what is probably pretty hard wood is a little past what I would be asking my 371 to do.

I realize it was just a test (and it was a excellent production) but it made me uneasy and I couldn't really bear to watch the whole cut.

Again, no offense, just giving my thoughts as I watched the well done vid. More vids, please, as it was very well done.

To "see" how a chain is really doing, watch and examine the chips. They tell the story.

Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time of sharing your chain testing with us on video. I know it takes alot of extra time to share with us on video and It is great to see someone else use a video to show the results of testing.
It usually is unappreciated by some here of the different cut speeds and different saws cut speeds in same size wood testing. But if just one sees and learns or helps make a decision on buying a saw or chain it was worth the extra effort.
So a Big Thank You for testing and video.
