If you don't make it there will be YouTube footage. I'm going up this week to do sub-filming then again for the cut to film a documentary on it. Full 1080P HD from multiple angles, surround sound chain saw soundtrack if I nail it right. There will be a DVD out if anyone is interested. I'm putting allot of work into it and have allot of people dedicating equipment to the process. I'll keep everyone posted.

Cool Floyd, I can't wait to see the pictures. I have a friend that just joined AS, he taught me to climb. Back about 3 yrs ago he craned a huge dead elm in Reading. It was a state record at the time, I never did find out why it died. I will try to get him to post some pics of the removal.

Any idea how long it will take with a crane and bucket to remove this tree? I don't know if they are planning on leaving the trunk there or not. I have to have enough film with me for the cameras.

Not too many trees that can't come out in a day with a crane and a 20" chipper anymore, esp. if they had a 75 foot picker like I do. Shut down that road and have at it. Might have to grind the stump the next day. Wires not a huge factor with an open side where the tree is.

Doesn't look like there is much trunk wood to bother milling.

There will be a lot to see trust me. Yeah I'd love to see the pictures anytime!

Oh definitely a day. Its just how many hours. They are closing the road down between 7am-4pm and all the wood is being used. I guess the trunk will be made into wooden bowls, and all kinds of crafts and the woods even going to be auctioned off. I guess this will be a good sized even.

Yup, got the OK at work for the day off, I'll be up there for the day armed with the camera. Anyone have a tele-zoom 200mm or longer, or prime lens 200-300mm+ they wouldnt mind renting out for the day? Canon EF-S lens. :)

What do you have for a camera? Video camcorder or stills? I would appreciate copies of all your footage and I will return the favor. I'm bringing a HDC-SD9 for zoom shots

Canon 40D for stills, I have some consumer grade canon camcorder that shoots dv-r, not sure of resolution, compresses like crap though.

So is this elm dead or unstructurally sound? Is that why it's coming down?

You know I have rigged down a $hit load of them over the decades with no bucket and no crane. The last one I did was a few years ago same size as that no bark and over wires and 2 houses and took 3 days.

Anyone that thinks they are a big time take down man should be put in one of them and let's see what they got. :kilt:

That beats my Canon SD980, I need a camera that will last through the entire take down from a distance for a time lapse. Maybe a power inverter from a car.

I phoned this lady up and she thought she could make it....

No0Oo!

Its a fine line between a close eyed battle and barley living. If you read the article it explains why the battles over.

i doubt i will be present for the take down. (Since i work for another tree company in the area) did anyone catch who is paying for the removal. (i scanned the article but might have missed it)

please pinkfloyd make this dvd availible, id love to have a record of the end of that historic tree. my parents lived in that town before i came along and i grew up in the next town north.

i have seen a naturally generated american chestnut. i actually had a leaf from it closed in one of my college textbooks. i forget which town we were in but it was north of bangor. it was actually on former paper company ground. skidder trail went by relatively near but it had obviously been avoided.

I'll try to make it as available as possible. Won't be quite a while there will be lots of editing to do, that regenerated chestnut stool wont last long until the blight attacks the shoots.

Friday 15th 9AM- Off to do the first pre-shoot in Maine. 3 hour drive from western MA. I'll check in later tonight. :Eye:

Don't take any $hit from Geraldo if he's up there.

Update

So the sight is a bit devastating, sends some hairs up on the back of my neck for sure. Here's some more old pictures after the spread reduction in 2008:

Thats all thats left of it??? I didn't know it was cut recently. Can't believe they are charging 20 g's for that.

They're removing it but I am surprised that is all they did with a spot for the crane AND a big bucket. I think the 20 g must be for the milling etc included?

REal nice picts Pink Floyd and great story picts. Can we see the copy on the one leaflet when you get back? How come no picts of the removal and equipment? Can't wait to see the vid.

It looks like the tree is still thriving despite the ridiculous cut backs earlier. Why are they removing it? Decay? Sometimes trees like this get removed in my town when dormant for obvious reasons and then they widen a road or something.
