i bought a brand new 3120 with 42'' bar ,i put it through it's paces on some hard beech big rings 3'+ imo it cut appallingly slow ,i put it down to the large 42'' bar so changed it for a 30'' bar i tried her out again on some biggish beech still very slow ,so slow in-fact my co-worker [employee] asked if there was something wrong with the saw  so i take her to the dealership for a re-tune guy/fitter said nothing wrong with her runs great

the saw still runs slow and lumpy imo ,i wish i'd never bought the darn thing,am i the only person out here who is VERY DISAPPOINTED with there new 3120 stock saw

Oh ok, no it can be any style cutter. It just has half as many cutters as a regular chain. Less crap to drag through a long cut. Bailey's should have some listed. I'll see if I can scrounge up al ink for you. :)

Pull the starter cover off the saw and see if you have a green weanie (And I mean on the saw). If you do you have a few options. 1. put a 395 coil and fly wheel on and adjust carb or 2 find an old black coil and reset carb. Either one will do you good.

What kind of chain are you running 3/8's or .404.
what gear 7 tooth or 8 tooth. a 3120 should pull around 9600 rpm's in the wood under load, and a muffler mod will help her get more torque

There must some other issue with the saw. Hard to believe Husky's big dog is a dog.

I don't suppose it's occured to anyone that new saws don't develop their full HP until the engine has broken in?

OK, hereis my 2 cents.

1. What erik said - let the thing break in before expecting too much.
2. Make sure the carb is adjusted correctly, and there are no problems with the muffler.
3. The 3120 is not a high RPM saw.
4. With a 30 inch bar, you can probably change the sproket to pick up some chain speed.
5. I would run at least a semi skip, if not a full skip, chain on a 30 inch or longer bar.

I remember the first time I put a 16" bar on my 3120. I expected it to just fly. Of course it didn't. The problem was not power it was speed. There is a difference. The 3120 does not turn the RPM that the smaller saws turn. My 046 or 272 will probably cut just as fast as the 084 or 3120 with a shorter bar. When running a short bar none of them are bogged down but the smaller saws turn at higher RPM's thus moving more feet of chain through the cut in a shorter amount of time. Now switch to a 32" bar in a large log. The key now is power the smaller higher RPM bars are now bogged down and lose RPM. The 3120 has plenty of power and keeps its RPM steady throughout the cut. I have no idea if your 3120 is running at full potential or not but I can tell you that I have been satisfied with mine.

Does anyone know why the rated power of the 3120 has been adjusted down to 8.4hp?
I think it was 9.2 when it was introduced in the late 1980's.

aparentley they were even worse earlier on with carb issues,i cant say anything good about a 3120 other than its slightly better than 076,but seriously we run one with a 36"and its not much fun,it will get thru things but the huskys chain speed and zing just arnt there.im not the only one to say it either.

lopa,
Is that your milling saw? Looks like a remote throttle device to use with an Alaskan.
