That red oak must be pretty bad a** timber. I have fallen 24 to 30 inch diameter trees with a 20 inch bar on an 028. I took a loooongg time and had my escape paths well thought out. Never done any production though...but a small saw CAN do big things! The first felling job I had was with an ax...a cherry tree if I recall...you can look it up.

now we got ol george washington piping in here

John, back when you and George Washington were privates. I think you would have tried that tree with a 346:)

Russ, some of these loggers are gettin a bit older now and saw weight is always an issue.
If I had to bend over and run a saw with a 20" bar I would be gettin' old - too - Really Quick Like. I thought a 32" was small. Anyway - This thread is becoming really gay. Kinda of like Queer Eye for the Chainsaw Guy gay.

Well here in clearcut washington we run nothing less than a 046's and most run 066's usually fitted with a 28" to 32" bar wether the saw is used for falling or chasing on the landing and thats just the way it is period.

Yeah, I'll do that. My humor is not politically correct - sorry fellas.

Whooahh, You are big time correct with that reply (politically who cares). I PM'ed you to apologize for my last post. Never back down to my smart a$$ remarks here. I have lots of saws but only use them for fun. And I appreciate the whole spectrum of posters here...no matter how many saws they have or what brand names.

you guys up in washinton dont know the meaning of clearcut! Oregon is where the real loggins at, never seen a fella run anything less than 88 with a 7 foot bar, even for limbing. We're just big like that i guess

I don't know of anyone around here running anything less than a 24" bar in the woods daily...

what was the point of seeing if a 5100 "could" drop a red oak? of course it could be done if you got the time.......i'm sure i could drop the same tree with a 57.00 wild thing, but why would i want to, just to see if it could do it. as long as the saw stays running i'm sure it could do it. so what was the lesson learned?

Hey, UP here in WA, we mount TWO 088 head on each end of a 8 foot bar so two guys just walk though the forest nipping off anything in the way. Only thing that can stop us is really good beer! :blob5:

well, i didnt want to boast, but Stihl makes a special saw just cutters down here in Oregon nicknamed "The Million Dollar Saw", with three times the power of the 088. They come stock with a 20ft bar, and it dont take two people to operate. Yep, some guys just run bigger bars I guess. . . ;)

Hey Jokers, just found an interesting definition in a new "American" dictionary.

manly man; any chainsaw operator who cannot file,
any person who would rather use his back instead of his brain,
a woodsman that values horsepower over skill.

there was one more definition that caught my eye

Jokers; all of the above.

bye for now, Art the whimpy Nova Scotian
