Here is that clove on the ball, bubba
steel028.jpg
Notice the angle and weight is more extreme here then in the other pic?

I'm not a pro, not even an advanced amatuer, and I wouldn't THINK of doing that!

I've use trailer balls as anchor points for pulling stuff... STUFF! NOT PEOPLE, and I've seen them slip off.

That's just ....

Well, I won't say it.

Unreal.

<br>

For your daughter's sake you ought to give up the practice of hanging your life off of a clove hitch tied to a ball on a hitch!

It makes zero f'n sense.

Well lets go on then, please. How about that kid? Anyway, Did you not just see the truck picked up with the same knot I just put my tushy on? I know what the books say now AND its not common practice for me to do it. I looked at the variables and I know the knot, I know how I tie it, I know how its going to work. I also don't make it a habit of climbing after parrots after I have been sucking down beers all day.
Tell me that ball or hitch is going to break... I dare ya. I am not looking to fight over it but give me some reference to go by here.
By the way, I did make it to the top of the rope that was being supported by being caught in a crotch by a knot, just not that day. But ain't that kid cute? AWW you know she is and your jealous.:)

It is safe to say that you have never SEEN The Dan do it. He does it right, it don't slip, slipping is for suckers... and for people who don't know. Unreal? No you just saw it, its real. Unreal is the idiots hooking up to your ball hitch, tenderfoot.

There is no possible way that you two guys can be that razzled, unless you are used to seeing idiots go around. You don't think I would climb up there if I had even the littlest notion that knot would fail do you?

Surely a legend like "The Dan" can recognize that there is a time and a place for every knot. But a Clove hitch on a ball for a lifeline?

The kid in the pic looks like she is also in disbelief. :monkey:

Well then I might as well sell out and get that icecream shop my wife wanted to get.

Well, I came back here to delete my post. Since I'm not a tree guy, I thought I'd just bow out of the discussion. However, since you've seen it and (quite unnecessarily) quoted the whole thing, there's not much point in that.

It is safe to say that you have never SEEN The Dan do it.

No, but I've seen plenty of others with the same attitude, in many different walks of life, many different occupations.

They all sound the same, tiresome same. Same bravado, same self-assurance, same unwillingness to consider that they just might not be the best thing since sliced white bread.

Seems like most of them even have that silly habit of referring to themselves in The Capitalized Third Person.

They are never safe people to work with.

Well, unless it's a desk job, I guess. Then they're just a pain to be around, and get in the way a lot.

I sincerely hope you soon get a good scare and come out of it 100% okay, but with the beginning of some wisdom.

For that cutie's sake, at least.

You've got a cute daughter there.

That set up does seem to hold well and I won't go on and on about it .........

........after all, it's your neck!

I was always wondering why you never had kids. Yeah, I know I'm a dill wad, go on... What ya got on that knot? I really like it, never had a problem although its not my first choice for the application. Like I said I sized it up and made a choice. I have been doing it for awhile, sizing things up and making choices that is, I felt good about. You are right though, not something to pull staright up from the ball with.
In all earnest anything you have to say is taken with, well, me listening... somewhat.

Inside I am like a scared nervous bunny rabbit, no joke. I take time to triple check before I send myself or anybody else off.
Now all you m and f'ers got me thinking I am going to die, Wait! I think that allready. That's why The Dan really checks up on me.
I tell ya I never have seen such a great kid.All she want is for you to give her TEN MILLION DOLLARS!

Dan, my 2 cents.

There are a lot of other ways to anchor your rope. Clove hitches loaded the wrong way by accident are notorious for capsizing.

I am sure you have a steel shackle or other suitable hardware to use to anchor to your truck or an immovable object.

In my line of work, I see a lot of people that have done dangerous things day in and day out and been fine. Never gotten hurt. But sometimes the variable they didn't account for hurts them bad or worse.

I look at the ones that cannot be helped and wonder why they chose the sequence of events that led up to injury and even death.

I have to ask you to rethink your attitude over some basic things like anchor points.

Please don't try to convince me that the way you are doing it is fine....

You will not sway my opinion and I will not discuss it further with you...

Be safe (not carefull...carefull still gets you hurt! Be safe!)

The second sentence sums it up for me I will have you know. Actually when I think about it that is the second time since 1991 I recall tying off to to clove. The first time, way back when, I used it on a line strung over a house. I tied a clove in the middle, on the peak of the roof, to tie into to blow out the gutters. Now I used a butterfly or a rope grab for that sort of stuff.
How about that kid, huh? Yeah you know:)

Ya know that is exactly what I was thinking, time and place. I was looking at the site and while getting ready I was thinking of how I was going to anchor. I measured it all up and it seemed viable to slap it down on the ball hitch with a nicely dressed clove and go try to get that bird. The Dan wouldn't go if it wasn't ok. OK?
Now about that kid.. don't worry about her, she's got more bounce than the F-n bomp.
Am I gonna lose points now? DANNY PLEASE DON"T DO THIS ME!

Don't worry Treeco 2

You don't think I used that line to move around the tree do you? I took another up for that. I knew the clove would hold just fine to get up, I worked and came down a separate line... if that helps. I also just made sure it was dressed right.

the only thing a clove hitch is good for is to tie a horse to a post. and since i do not own a horse i have never used that knot.

btw tman are you backing that knot up with any half hitches?

beautiful kid you got there dan. you wouldnt want her to be standing over you asking if you used that stupid knot again, do you?

edit. i have used the clove hitch to send down multiple branches down on 1 line....but not as my go to knot.

Then there is the story of a guy who was working on the roof of his house and tied a safety rope to the bumper of his car...

His wife decided to go to the grocery store in that car!

Am I understanding this correctly? "The Dan" is securing his access line to the ball on his truck with just a clove hitch? Is there really nothing else to secure it to? I guess it would make for an easy SRT rescue, just roll the clove off the hitch and down comes "The Dan". Give me a break.

The kiddo must of got her brains from dad as she got her looks from momma! (no offense)

I always tell folks that the kids must have gotten their good looks from me.

Naturally, they are shocked at such self glorifying nonsense until I quickly share the punchline....

....cause their momma still has hers. ;)

The point behind showing off my kid? Well that should be self explanatory BUT other than that it was to show what knids of things The Dan thinks about when chosing a knot... actually at every step. I told you The Dan overthinks, you have to believe him.
Yes, its not the right knot BUT it was hooked -up by someone who could handle it. Once again I love you all, for different reasons of course, and thank you for your concern and for your critism. I would not want some rookie thinking he could do what The Dan does. It would not be good.
I know I always sound like I think I am great but really... not so. Most likely I will resume to using a strap and biner to secure my line to hitch and use the remote starter to operate the truck from aloft.
Now you all saw me lift the truck which that clove, right? The Dan can walk in the living room in the dark cause he knows where he put the furniture. Wait til I show you the blindfoded, one handed, reach around notch cut then backcut while taking out the top.
