Do you get the impression that he cares about OSHA?

I think there is a line in The Z about not tieing a climbing line to a vehicle, but it's not relevant in this discussion, since this is all about calling Dan an idiot for increasing his risk level like that.

Actaully my risk level is at a MUCH LOWER level these days. That was nothing.
Now what is up with that book?

My opinion is worth more than two cents, so here it is.

This is at least a quarter's worth, Dan, so listen up.

I don't have a problem with a truck tow ball as a TIP, it's probably much stronger than your rope. It is round and won't cut the rope, either.

Unfortunately, it is rather smooth. Polished, in fact. Everybody knows that a clove hitch relies on the friction of the wraps and the non-rolling stability of the "branch" to prevent unrolling.

In case you didn't know it, a clove hitch is nothing more than a 1/2 hitch (or an overhand knot) with an additional 1/2 wrap. If you don't think so, unwind a clove hitch 1 turn and see what you are holding.

I am sure that you wouldn't tie an overhand knot on that ball, so why use the clove hitch ? It is pretty darn easy to add one more 1/2 hitch, and then you would have had a reliable knot.

You could also have added a stopper knot to that clove hitch, and it would have been better. Even the old fashioned "taut line hitch" friction knot was little more that FOUR 1/2 hitches, and it requires a stopper knot to be safe.

We're glad you are fine, but please use a better knot next time.

Yes. Cute kid. Looks kind of like my two, just younger. They are graduating from cute and getting into "pretty". Before long, I anticipate "beautiful", and that comes with Beaux (boyfriends)

Hey thanks, really, but did you miss the part where I said i know all about the **** I get into or I don't get into it? Listen up? lol-ing here Mr. Man.
No, I am not being arrogant just confident. Thanks again, but everything is fine here, and will be, how's it looking your way?
YES I COULD HAVE USED A BETTER KNOT...
I must really stress that if there are any youngins out there watching, The Dan was a bad boy and NEVER do anything that even closely resembles what he is doing. Now what in the heck is osha? Now don't go getting all indignant on me. I was serious about thanking all who offered.

Come on Dan, don't get thin skinned on me.

Someday I'll confess to all the non-OSHA and non-ISA stunts that I have pulled. Then everybody (including you) can pick on me.

Don't hold your breath, though. I have seen how picky this forum can be.

Not thin skinned am I nor The Dan. We haven't called anybody a !@#$%^&*()!@#$%^&*()!@#$%^&*()!@#$%^&*()!@#$%^&*(!@#$%^&*(!@#$%^&@#$%^&$%^&jerk, have we? Not even John Paul John Paul.
But they are right and I submit, Its one thing for me to do what I do, which is fine, but if someone don't know that much and they see it... I put some time into making that clove work, not much but still. That clove is NOT correct for what I was doing BUT The Dan is able to do it, that don't make it right. Neither of us are ones to be teaching our bad habits.
The one I climbed on was backed-up but not the one I lifted the truck.
allright maybe I called treeco a Dill-hole but that was for something else.

Don't think I would be using that knot for that application. I am
not going to preach to the Dan  I have done just as wild but have
learned to stick with better knots today. I have used all sorts of stuff and
even climb on occasion with bowline on the bight for a saddle but not real
often!
