One of my neighbors has some slash pines and last year one of them seemed to be dying but later in the year it came back, mostly. it got to the point where 70% of its needles turned brown. then much later in the year it was almost all green. It did not occur during any drought conditions and 15 other pines of the same species were fine.
this year there are 2 with the same symptoms. I would say about 50% of the needles have turned brown on 2 different trees that are about 100 feet away from one another.
Is this an insect problem and what could I look for as a sign of what is happening to the trees?
