I just fed a bag of the tsc feed. I usually don’t. My hens never slowed.

Ok new update on egg. It was a double. Old man ate it before he went to dialysis this morning. So was a double. Moms was home when I stopped through. She thought she had the big egg.

My story is very confusing here but yes it was a standard double yolk. I just caught the wrong story lol

Yeah idk how much truth there is in it. Just something my wife showed me from waste book the other day.

I am not sure about the double yokes , I think you would be beating a dead horse though.
Now for the news lol, I got 16 eggs again today.
And I have a pic you just want believe.

THAT IS MY CAT SHE HAD 4 KITTENS IN THE CHICKEN HOUSE WITH THE OLDER CHICKENS
They cohabited the hen house for 3 weeks, One of the hens roosted right next to the cat and they laid eggs in the nest right beside her
Got to be a first.

I like hanging out at our local feed mill when the weather is crappy. Many people have switched to feeding plain ground shell corn at $10.50/ 50 lbs versus around $16/ 50 lbs for scratch. A ton of scratch has 1000 pounds of crack corn, 650 lbs wheat, 350 lbs oats, and 50 lbs wet molasses. If I am not mistaken it works out to around 10% protein. Ground corn has 8%, so many are mixing it with a few pounds of fish meal and oyster shells for a harder shell. No complaints from the egg producers and they are saving money to boot.

Ours here is 16% protein. $12.00 and some change for 50lbs. Almost $11.00 for rolled corn 50lbs.

That’s supposed to be a very good blend for laying. I haven’t used it yet but I’m planning on it. Im no expert on egg laying chickens but 10 percent sounds a tad low on protein.

You’ve gotta toast the soy for some reason beyond my understanding

With the price of sbm, it goes in very few feed mixes with the exception of beef feed. I will double check the protein tomorrow, but I am sure it was between 10 and 12 %.

Is that pre sacked feed or bagged in a local mill?
Pre sacked from the local mill. Used to be there every weekend to get feed when we lived on the farm. Got some weird looks when I backed the truck up to the old loading dock and went to fill a few bags.sure was glad one of the old guys recognized me. Guess with the bio-secure whatever they keep a couple skids ready to go up by the office now. Lots has changed in 15 years....

Yeah we can't even take back used sacks anymore. I think mad cow was the reason for that.

I remember going to get feed the same way you’re talking. We refilled our old worn out bags with duct tape on a few of them. I ended up getting a feed grinder when I was 13-15 years old. I still have it and used it a couple years ago. Just not worth dragging it out for a dozen or so chickens. I keep a few cows around still but mainly just feed round bales now.

I decided to buy some livestock feed at the local feed store for my birds. dont know whats in it, but I can see corn and smell the mollases. Anyway, its supposed to be 15% protein and its $8 for 50lbs. I am mixing it with 16%layer pellets about half and half. I just recieved my 5 gal bucket feeder kit today. My plans are to fill one feeder with the pellets and the other with the stock feed and let the birds figure out which one they want. The problem I am having with mixing the feed is the birds seem to rake out the pellets to get the live stock feed first. One think I have noticed is a difference in the taste of the eggs since I started feeding the livestock feed. The egg whites dont seem quite as runny and the yoke seems thicker to.

If you ever want to figure your final protein content you can use the Pearson square. It will never lie to you.

They have more color, the yokes stand right up in the pan, and scrambled eggs don't need a lot to taste down right delicious.

Here on the east coast they use a lot of soybean meal. It’s just to get the protein up I see they also add alfalfa to this which surprises me.
