Eliminating dust cover on DHT 25 ton splitter hydraulic fluid filter

In addition to a new engine, I treated my DHT 25 ton splitter to a new hydraulic fluid filter. Seems like the new one has a very slow leak near the top where it attaches to the fitting but is also covered by a flimsy, rubber cover. I'm wondering if that rubber thingy is preventing a tight seal. Anyone do away with it and just plain eliminate it or come up with another dust cover or barrier? If I remove it (and presumably the filter), will the gasket or O ring on the filter prevent a tight seal after being tightened previously? It's always something…

I have never seen that before. All the pics show a regular gasket on the top. I think you were supposed to take that off. Seems crazy for them to spend on a rubber cover like that. The gasket should still seal after being tightened once. If not, just get another filter.

Yeah, don't use that original filters 'dust cover'. I threw mine out with the original filter. (It looked as though it was both the filter seal/o-ring, and a dust cover, anyway.) Did you stack that on top of your new Purolator lube filters o-ring? If so, unscrew your new filter and get it off there.
