Essential? No way.
If you want to be prim and proper- have a fetish for labelled gadgets, cannot figure out how to make do with what can be found, have a fat wallet- sure, go get yourself one- but there are many ways to skin a cat.

Instead of an inner tube, a piece of a thick balloon would work the same way on the intake side and not seal up leaks on carb side.
