"Now let me tell the story 'bout a little Texas shrub,

Who cuts down all his landscape; he calls it nasty 'scrub'.

He's a man who cuts his own, don't need no arborist,

Don't need no librul brain around, Stihl saw in his fist.

He's killing all his cedar trees, sayin' that's his divine function;

Swears that sapsuckers in their nests have grown

Feathers of Mass Destrunction."

Thank heaven we have simple right-wing men with big saws to keep our world safe from declining cedars and those big bad birdies!

Love to chat some more politics witcha, but can we do it offtopic?

We're labelling those who's checks bounce as "liberal?"

Come on now. Fifteen years of wilt work and a data base of 14,000 trees and you want to get into who's checks are good vs. who's are rubber? Okay then.

The rich don't pay. They aren't paying the taxes, retail prices, or for services. The only checks I had to collect on were from the filthy rich and guess who they were? The ones getting richer. Need I go further? I won't.

The only redeeming factor of a B.F. Goodrich cheque, is at least you having something to go back with. lol
When I buy timber, it's all based on trust. I never sign contracts, except with the government and I never pay for the trees till they are down, out and payed for. This way, I reserve the right to pay more for the timber if it's value turns out to be more than my original estimate.

This foolish notion is the basic setup for many a scam. Anyone with a scanner and printer can make all the Bank Checks they want.

Speaking from experience, eh?:p

I agree Mike. I think it might not cost too many jobs for 1st time customers (perhaps they don't know until the bill is due), but it would be enough to stop some people from calling him back for repeat work.

They know well in advance, Rock.

Why is it such a big deal? Do you write checks at the convenience store?

I'd be leary of one that did, frankly. It's not the exception; rather the norm.

Now answer me this: Why is it so important to you that you can pay with a check?

Guy, you misspelled "destruction".

Right wing how? Get real.

Their manifest destiny.

Everything out there is mine if I so choose 'cause I have the drive..and need. That's what I liked about car jacking. Personal achievement.

The only difference between that homie taking that Lexus and Kenneth Lay taking all those retirement investments is Kenneth Lay bought the laws and changed them to his favor.

Don't worry though, his money will trickle down. So will the Lexus...the parts will create another industry, the wounded driver will help doctor's portfolios, and the homie will support the quart sales of cheap beer on his profits.

It's all good.

God bless America.

I wouldn't hire a service that wouldn't take my check, would you?
And if they want cash, I better be getting at least a 25% discount.

Thanks, I agree! Only people who have cheated others is afraid of being cheated. This is usualy true.

Funny question, when I lived in N.Y. Checks were taboo all over never really saw that many of them in business except to mail in to pay the bills. When I moved down to Va, checks are used for everything from a pack of smokes to movie tickets. Guess its a different mindset down south, folks are more trusting and willing to take the check risk, but also probably a lot less scammers down here trying to pass bad checks. Like Rocky said , not to many scammers really want to deal with a guy with a chain saw anyway.:)

Dada, I think you have hit upon the whole issue-Regional cultural differences. When I was traveling doing stumps I noticed that in some towns nearly everyone paid cash. In other towns it was almost all checks. The Northeast is different from the rest of the nation. Duh.... Mass. keeps reelecting Ted Kennedy.

2 years in business haven't been burned bad yet. Never taken a deposit, rarely get signatures, need to get some stump disclaimers. I could get fined for not getting signatures, but don't like the implication of distrust, etc. Only not been payed by one customer, they make small payments when hassled. Apparantly golf vacations take priority over paying the tree guy:rolleyes:. There have been a few stressfull months with $6-7k recievables and no $ to pay the bills. Imagine the game changes with employee overhead and big $ jobs. Getting burned would suck. until then...

Asking for a financial statement on BIG contracts is always good SOP. You don't wanna get involved with a client that might be facing bankruptcy.

That sounds like common sense, but I've know more than one who was stiffed in that manner.

Hmmmm, Has anyone/everyone Heard the story from the homeowner that they had hired a tree man once to take out a few trees and he told them he needed 1/2 the money up front to get his saw fixed? Then they never saw him again.

I Took an upfront payment 1 time from a customer to return a week later to remove another small tree. We had removed 2 and it was dark he was leaving town. Of course he wanted to watch. This was the week before the big Ice storm we had 2 yrs ago. What a Mistake! I Swore i would NEVER Take another Deposit or upfront payment again! When he returned I was completely covered up on the other end of the county Removing trees from Roofs and could not get to him for 2 days. He had a complete Fit! I finally removed his tree and Gave him a refund.

I would rather take a check than Cash.I have never had a problem with a check.I Can Nite deposit a check and would not Dare attempt that with Cash.
