i go with downgrading the climbing line, sling as soon as possible to rigging uses; whenever possible; look for the oppurtunity; visualize it when you purchase the line. Then downgrade from here to utility/sale/gift/practice rope as soon as feasible. Any time the regular rigging or life line becomes suspect in the use for its class, everything shifts down and the highest safety rating (new) goes to the application that requires the most (climber).

Wee have specialized size, stretch, strength, colored rigging lines; but take wear off them by using the most recently downgraded life line in non-specialty/ general apps. To give a flow of lines for general use; that the safest, freshest is always on me! Sometimes as some damage comes on; we make a shorter life line for under 35' anchor points or whatever, to put the wear and lower handling time on it; taking it off the main life line! By taking this work-able strategy; i feel i have found a safer, budgetable path to follow; that i can feel good about.

So i say downgrade early; see this path from the start when buying; change the color rope; to identify them from their neighbor as they flow through.

I like True Blue's (high ratings to Tree Pro Red)color, strength and characteristics in the knobbier 12 strand class; that i feel doesn't last as long; but is easier for a friction hitch of nylon/polyester or leather/hand to grab; making it a 'safer/slower' choice especiallyly for new climbers; groundies. A 5/8" 12 strand is really easier on "Tiny's" big roping mitts at the end of a lowering intensive day.

Love Wall's Max's color, EZV is very catching too but both harder to find.

Blue Streak; like the numbers, but harder to call for positively with a blue 'solid' (True Blue) on deck also, compromise when i have a True Blue in service at High Vee alternating with Spearmint (like the capped ends/splice/positive mechanical/safety knot stopper, Yale!) to keep seperated with others through its useful life and uses.

For tails and lanyards; Hy-Vee 3 strand for easy splicing, identification and gripping characteristics.

Many things to consider in each choice! Colors, climbers in use and the budget; i think it is safest to have a virgin rope in the bag, stored; so there is no hesitation to upgrade; also petition a local saw shop to carry some as backup for you as well as the bretheren! Reduce the reason for making the wrong choices as a running strategy!
