I'm talking Red, Black, Post and White Oak for firewood.
my two saws would be 260 and 440.

I'm happy to say, I don't have to make that choice ;)
I live on the same land that I cut wood on, and most
of the time I take to many saws to the woods.
and if I want another to run, jump on the ATV
and get it.

This all boils down to were you live and how big and if it is a hard wood or soft. Most of my trees are 20'' and under I do cut the odd large poplar 30+'' in the river bottoms. Wish I cut put the big boy's in some oak or walnut but they don't grow here! For me and most of the small trees I cut I can get by fine with my 2159 and a small saw for limbing. The biggest reason I use two saw's is I am lazy and don't feel like refueling all the time so the bigger saw is used for felling and bucking, the small one for limbing

I assume Iowa is similar.
What kind of trees are you cutting in Texas that are over 4 feet and suitable for a 260???

90% of the trees on our farm require 16" or less.
5% require 20"
4% require maybe 24-28"
1% require up to 3 manybe 4 foot.
One or 2 trees here need maybe a 6 foot to stump and the first 6 foot in the air.

And this is where the most trees are.

If I'm near the truck, I carry both my 346 and 372. If I'm in bigger lumber, I put a 32" bar on the 372 and a 20" on the 346. If I'm in medium sized stuff, I put the 24' on the 372 and the 16" on the 346. If I'm in small stuff, I will likely run the 346 with a 16" or the 372 with 20" (depends on how small).

If I'm away from the truck, I will usually take the 372 with a 24" bar and do it all, maybe carrying a 20" bar and chains in my faller's pack for the smaller stuff. One thing I love about the 372 is the bar changes are so fast and easy. It's not unusual for me to cut up the base of a tree with one bar, then convert to a smaller bar as the chain dulls or as the wood gets smaller.

I always have a 2nd saw in case of a pinch or malfunction and since I never cut alone, either someone is carrying the 2nd saw for me or has their own.

two saws

just want to know how many cords some of you cut a year I just got a bit bigger this year got new tw.6 ms.440 ms.460 ms.660 t.200 I have cut 70 cords oak/hickory 128.cu.ft have bri.mar 7/12 dump f.250 power.stoke to pull it cut the 70 cords this summer still cuting:greenchainsaw: :chainsaw:

660 is my best saw for felling and bucking that size hardwood. Any thing smaller then the 044 can stay at home for felling and bucking that size wood, not that it willnot do it. It just takes longer cutting through the smaller you go.The 660 makes it a smaller, quicker, job and it feels better zipping through the big stuff. I like a back up saw so i'd bring the 044 for that or to take a break with from the bigger saw. My 044 starts very fast and easy,so it gives my body a break in comparisin to running the 660 all day.

I used a rancher 55 with a 24" for a year as we cut and cleared 10 acres of scrub oak. works good but a little over worked.

This last year I stepped up to a 372xpw with HD filter and a 32" blade. So far I have felled and trimmed about 200 plus scrub oak in 5 months. I have both saws on my golf cart so I can switch between them.
I find myself using the 372 to fell the tree and then whack the large parts. Then switch to the rancher with a 20" when I get closer to the tops as it is a lot harder to wade into the tree.

Well, when I sold the stuff I cut that much. Now days I only burn about 4 or 5 cords per year .I think last year I cut 9 or little over.

I have a unique situation in the fact I can get all the wood I want from two tree services. As I type ,I have ,on the ground ,unsplit about 12 or so cords of oak.If I just could just con the boys to split and stack it ,I could relax under a shade tree and partake of the nice weather while enjoying a beverage or three.;)

Precisely. Nice post, can't disagree with any of it.

The bar lenghts you have on the 55 is most appropriate for
the 372xp, and way too much on the 55, for really good performance - but it allways are up to user expectations........

the 55 really likes the 20 much more than the 24" - I like the 24 on the rancher when I am brushing as I can reach further out in the pile. I also dont cut anything big with it anymore. The funny thing is that it was sold new to me with a 24 on it. Both shops that I now go to say it should have a 18 or 20 on it.
My 372 was sold to me with the 32. It will pull it in pretty much anything under 18". When I get into 24-40+ oak trees I really notice it needs more power.
Muffler mod to the rescue on that.

044(woodsported)/28"bar semi skip!!!!! Square grind chisel

I'm not sure how I would answer if someone handed me $1,500.00 and said; "Pick your two saws!"

The "two saw combo" I am currenty running is a 441 (24" bar) and 026 (18" bar). Maybe not optimal for some, but it sure gets the job done for me.

how is your hemlock logging coming along?

how is your hemlock logging coming along?

It's coming along okay and thanks for asking.

I have had about 14,000 board feet picked up and have another 7,000 or so staged and ready to go. Everything I'm staging now is 8', 10', 12', or 16'. There is 4 inches of trim on all but the 16 footers. I'm leaving 8 inches of trim on those at the request of the sawer.

Today used the 066 w32" bar to cut up limbs from a take down I am doing biggest limb was prolly 5-6" across was not under sawed. I do think ill take the 044 tommarow tho it only has 28" bar may be a little handier in the tangled pile..:chainsawguy:

MS 361 24" bar (for the landing or to keep on the machine) MS 460 32" bar (for cutting and bucking). Hell, I bet there are 7,439 combos available to choose from. GET er DONE!
