I finally broke down and borrowed my neighbors "redneck" splitter. Im pretty sure its home built (not by him, he bought it) with a 5hp motor. Fluid is built into the main box beam with about a 28 inch stroke and about 15 sec cylcle time. The plumbing was a little screwy since the auto was on the ram stroke and you had to hold the lever for return. I think Ill recommend to him that he swap the lines for safety.
I typically split all my wood by hand, but I had some 20-24 inch pine that I just could not get done. I had to build a small ramp to roll the pieces up onto the splitter. After that, it was a piece of cake.
Looks like a splitter is gonna have to be in my budget for next year. Most likely will be a horizontal/vertical type for the big stuff.
