Flat files all the same?

There are quality files like Nicholson and there are substandard files like the ones made in China... Easy peasy.

I have found that the Mexican Nicholsons are often quite a bit softer than the HFT Chicoms.

There are also single-cut, double-cut ... different sizes and shapes ... some are coarser...

My 50+ year old Nicholson`s were made from good steel, not a spot of rust on them, a light coat of 3 in 1 has kept them in like new condition. They are stored warm and dry, other than a light coat of oil.

also graded by coarseness:
******* files 26 teeth per inch
2nd cut files 36 teeth per inch
smooth files 60 teeth per inch

also, files specifically for aluminum so they don't clog as much.

The file shape, tooth pattern, and hardness are specific for round, chainsaw, sharpening files.

I don’t believe some of that is as important for the depth gauges, where a basic mill file will suffice.

But, since we are discussing differences between files, I will post a link to my epiphany about choosing the right files for reshaping damaged, plastic, felling wedges. Made a HUGE difference!
