I use the same technique, only I use a Swabish instead of a VT. Some times I may go with a end of the rope Blakes that is tied just at the end of my arms lengh so I can get as much slide from my hitch as I can pull up with my feet. Lately I have been just using a Swabish with a minder pulley and scootin on up there and lettin the pulley mind my slack. My buddy calls this the "Funky Footlock"

There are times when I think it's appropriate to footlock the tail. Those are when the point where I tied in my rope is low enough that the time it would take to tie in my footlock prusik and then switch to the VT when I got up the top would not warrant the use of the footlock.

It's a rare occasion when that happens. Usually it is faster to footlock the doubled line then switch to Ddrt when I get up to the top.

Yeah, but you can boogie up and trim out the lower branches on your way up and never have to switch your hitch.

This is what Rocky told me (paraphrased) before I bought a Pantin and now that I have it I gotta agree, especially since my current climbing boots suck for footlocking:

"That's the best little $55 POS I ever bought!"

Since I got it I footlock the tail a lot more often. And I also dig the Funky Footlock, Kenn.

At what height do you switch from footlocking the tail and go to an SRT or DdRT ascent?

If I ever have to ascend more than 20' it takes less energy to SRT. I can't imagine FL any more than that in production mode.

Rob,

Is your comment about stepping on the Pantin, making the clicks? It should never touch the ground if it's positioned correctly.

Tom,
Have you ever timed your SLT ascents... How long on average does 50' take and what would your top time be if you were racing?
I'll probably bypass footlocking and go right to SLT, but definitely not back to body thrusting.

I use the Pantin and like it. And would like to foot lock better. My boots slip about every 3rd time when I FL double rope, which is the way I climb. Maybe single when someone shows me.

Was thinking to get a pair of ankel high rubbers and cut the toe and heal out leaving only rubber where the the rope would be. Leaving a strp of rubber in back of heal. This might work for a better grip on the rope. (A new product?)

Rocky:

I put my pantin on in the morning and take it off at the end of the day. Sometimes depending on if i am in a rush or lazy or whayever i might not take my saddle off, and walk into the store/fast food joint. Walk up to the counter, clerks eyes lookin at my saddle, "Yes, that is a chainsaw, but to the point, I want a #5 plain with a Coke"

(But we know its a pain to sit in an automotive seat with a saddle hangin off ya:), but ya get looks)

Its the noise the Pantin makes as you walk cause the cam hits against its surounds as their is no rope in it..

Are you guys doing something different with that Pantin than I am. The strap on mine works loose some times when I'm accending, a real PITA when your up about half way, any helpful hints to cure this problem.
