How do you start that cr 500 based saw you run? I have the same motor shoehorned into a 02 cr 250 chassis and it will bruise your foot if you start it without a pair of riding boots on. Also how much HP are you getting out of it? I know cr500 can be buitl to 85hp in hillclimb and motard trim.

Starting the Big 500

Bwalker,
I've rope started it from the get go. I used to cold start it in the Timbersport series and for Albany all the time. Things have changed alot now. If I have to cold start I use my 250 and most big cut races out here are hot start, so I electric start it. I also have 2 compression releases in the head. The other 500 has 5 releases, a little more compression! If you look in your cylinder, right above the exhaust port, Honda put in 2 little divits to give it some relief for kick starting. My bike was hard to kick start too. Once the saw is warm, one pull every time! Check out the picture. I like to keep the electric around just in case.

H.P. ?

Bwalker,
It's hard to tell about H.P. i've never had it on a dyno. That year motor 1985 had the most stock H.P. around 55. But this motor has alot of work done to it. I just run 110 gas with 2oz. of nitro propane. You will get more H.P. with Alkie and nitro meth. That's what the hillclimber's use.

The 85 cr motor was very powerful indeed. They actually changed the porting to detune it slightly as that motor had a abrupt off idle powerband. The newer motors rev out better(at least for a 5 hunny). A 39mm pwk carb helps in this area also. You can also port these motors to make in the neighborhood of 85 hp on staright racing gasoline. Add nitro propane, isoprene, mtbe and a few other chemical goodys to the bunch and you might get another 15-20% out of it powerwise.

Steve,
With my longest bar and chain it weights 70lbs. and with a 22" aluminuim bar it's down to 62lbs.
Bwalker, Honda had to detune the 85, cause Ricky Johnson couldn't ride it on a supercross track. They got rid of the 500 class a few years later. To much unuseable power. Maybe you should build a saw out of that one you have and come out West. But you'll have to beg, borrow, or steal for some of that 1/2" chain you know.I just heard Lambert imported some from Germany. Maybe he'll help you build it, he's always game for some goofy chainsaw project. A post as you build project on Arboristsite, yah now we're logging!
