I am considering going to Georgia for a few weeks this winter to annoy loggers there too. Never, ever having been near there, does anybody know what kind of bugs are bad in say, January? Snakes? Is it cool in the winter so I won't be really cranky? Do they have espresso? Will I face massive ridicule if I show up with calks?

I have only passed thru Georgia a few times and it was years ago, but I would bet the weather is similar to here. For myself the winter weather is darn near perfect on average. More than likely it will be at least longsleve shirt weather and possibly colder. With a little luck the worst thing will be a cold rain, but nothing a PNW'er cant handle.
The bugs will probably be hiding or at least they will not be a problem, like in warmer times. Snakes in Jan. would be rare too, but not out of the question if it happened to get up in the 80s or so.
Might take the corks but I bet you will find that you dont need them.
Expresso? No problem, most all loggers around here have at least one exp.machine on the landing. ( Smiley )

Come on down

Won't be any bugs. If you do see a snake in Jan. they are moving very slow.
I've traveled all over and wouldn't trade the winters here for anywhere. It get's just cold enough most years to feel great wlile you're working. Yes, we have expresso most towns, notice I said towns. Might take a little ribbing on the caulks at first, but the same guys will be asking where you got them before the week is up. PM me with a cell # before you come and we'll get together for a triple expresso. I'm in the north part of the state.

Thanks. I'll see if I can farm out my old dog up here, and start calling about it. And, Mr. Ellison, I have two camping espresso makers and carry a lot of stuff to make coffee on the landing in case we PNWers get stuck out by a volcano eruption, flood or some other kind of disaster.;) We'll have a civilized and jittery disaster response. It might come in handy the way this winter is already going here.

I sure wouldn't bring one. A guy has offered to sell me his but I told him there's a lot more fun ways to go broke. I need to call and see if they are still recruiting. I talked to a friend who had worked there a couple of weeks.
Apparently, the Oconee NF is trying to take care of a pine beetle epidemic and need extra people to come and work there for a few weeks at a time. My specialty is one that they listed as needed. I shouldn't be too cranky for them if the weather doesn't get hot. And I didn't buy a season pass for skiing this winter so I won't be spending so much time up at the Pass.

Are they doing any aerial spraying?

I missed this post earlier.
If you are in red Georgia clay you might want to spray some pam or silicone on the bottom of your corks.
In most of the state you wont need them. It is pretty flat and you can easily step over any of the logs. If you get into some of the hills they might be nice.
Just remember GA considers itself "The New South". They are really trying to seperate themselves from the old sterio types.

Looks like the trip is not going to happen. I can't seem to hook up with the people in charge and they are changing the person in charge every two or three weeks. I go in early here and call but nobody is there, by the time I get back to the office from the woods, it is too late. The 3 hour difference is too much, we need to change the time so we're closer!:) We're suddenly having Indian Summer here after a short October winter. So, it is busy here and I'm not bored yet...This afternoon I'll go out and chase elk hunters out of log decks. The early bird hunters have already been changing the lengths of logs and it is maddening. They're green logs!! With No Firewood Cutting signs on them. Of course, everybody obeys signs....:censored: Done with ranting now.

No snakes in the winter, mild winter temps 45-65 degrees daily. Caulks make good golf shoes, paint them black. Try calling your Ga. connection about 3 PM. your time. Plenty of Star-bucks for expresso. Bugs are gone in the winter mo's. Try calling the Ga. Forrestry Div. might know about winter work. Rentals are reasonable down in South Ga.. Population is heavy & landclearing is booming, with all the snow-birds. New construction starts at about 500 per mo.. Gulf Stream Areospace , largest employer. St. Patrick's Day Parade about 2nd. largest in the nation right here. Largest Historic District available ! Click on Savannah, Ga. for any other information ! Hope this little bit helps.

They should be charged what they devalue the logs plus a fine.
